Lightbulb Can you " teach '' heart?

We've all heard the saying," You either have heart, or you don't. You can't teach it."

What do you think about that statement? Do you believe that is true, that "heart," (grit, a certain mental fortitude, undefeated spirit, passion, however you want to "define" it...) is innate, or do you believe that this quality can be trained in a person? Why do you believe the way you do?

I believe heart is more innate than it can be taught. Very similar to other human traits that are unique to each of us. Some have it and some do not. Some people can sing, some cannot. Some people strive with their last ounce of courage and some quit or are defeated easily.
Helping one person may not change the world, but it could change the world for one person.

I may not be able to sing very well, but I try. Singing is another very therapeutic outlet for me. Personally, I agree with you that "having heart" is inate. I think anyone who has the discipline to stick to a fitness regimen is showing heart and determination, no? Thanks for replying!!!

Sometimes I do wonder whether one could have "too much heart." It seems the more heart, the pain that goes with it...

^^ It's true, my first-generation uncle was a boxer who fought Sugar Ray Robinson! He also fought in the war, sacrificing the career he deeply loved, so people could have the right to freedom.

Let's show RESPECT for the POLICE and ALL FIRST RESPONDERS by helping to keep THEM SAFE AND SOUND, and thereby able to PROTECT US!

It's possible, but not without reason, ambition, vision or a goal.

Do you mean having "having heart" in the gym, for instance, isn't enough if you don't know have a clear vision or goal?

That's probably correct at least to some degree. A guy at a gym I go to told me that his key to staying consistent was having a bodybuilding competition to work towards. I've tried to adopt his advice only with powerlifting. Having a goal can help you push through when you need to.

Most people do not compete. A goal to me is temporary and you cannot compete forever. So, that cannot apply to most here - like 95%.

I have been lifting my entire adult life because it is therapeutic and I look and feel better with an athletic build. I was 135 in college and it took many years to naturally gain to 200lbs. The journey, discipline, peace of mind and results make it worthwhile for me to get up at 3:45am to workout without fail.

I've known some competitive bodybuilders as well, and they would say having that concrete goal is exactly what kept them on track!

That's easy for you to say, since I've posting on threads filled with dudes (good men, I mean). But I can hold own.

I'm so tired from lack of sleep, but I have to get back to my gym. I'm actually nervous about how well I'm going to do. Dumb? There are more important things to be concerned about...

It would be enough to keep you going for a while, but I don't think having heart alone would be motivation enough to keep you going. A vision and goal are key for motivation and focus. A lot of people start gym and give up after a certain amount of time, they had heart at the start but nothing to keep them going (talking about the ones that just up and quit, not the people that stop due to injury etc).

I personally don't think it should be about competing unless that's what you want. To me it's about challenging myself and improving any way I can. I used to be really skinny and ever since I started training and gaining weight I feel like a completely different person. I feel amazing after every gym session, I go 5 days a week and it's a constant grind that I never want to end. I had goals in mind and I've already surpassed them, now I've set myself higher goals and am in the process of working towards them. I don't think I would have achieved this much if I didn't have goals or a vision in mind.

I was able to do that a couple of years ago. But these last couple of months have really affected me. Maybe I was right to have stayed off social media to begin with...lol...maybe it's just not for some people, or moderation is the key, just like everything else. I'm sorry to hear you deal with this. It could be hell.

Thanks. Social media should not keep you up, unless you can't stop posting for the day What I mean is, other people should not bother you enough on social media for it to negatively affect your sleep.

It's not people bothering me that's disrupted my sleep. It's the actual "light" sources that have disrupted my sleep cycles...

I think "heart" is one of those things that is misunderstood. I think it is a quality that everyone innately has, but like a sculpture, it is hidden underneath layers of rough marble (life B.S.) that just need to be chipped away. Michelangelo is famous for stating that the masterpiece ALWAYS existed in the block of marble, and that his talent was simply revealing to everyone else what it is that he already saw.

You can see this played out constantly in life. Little kids are almost universally excited, eager to please, exploratory, happy without reason, and often in awe of the simplest things. As we get older, life and societal BS starts piling on top of that innate perfection like layers of an onion. People get lost in those layers... utterly trapped... they start chasing mirages and often find themselves scratching their heads as to why they always end up in the same spot still thirsty.

    Heart = stubbornness.

It's the good side of it.

So your "heart" in general is gonna be governed by how stubborn of a person you are.

What do you think about that statement? Do you believe that is true, that "heart," (grit, a certain mental fortitude, undefeated spirit, passion, however you want to "define" it...) is innate, or do you believe that this quality can be trained in a person? Why do you believe the way you do?
It's not taught, but neither is it innate. It must be inspired.

Success easily inspires me. But what happens if it's temporarily waning? Do still find it within yourself and draw upon your own (recent or not) past successes or do you tend to look outside for external influence?

I believe you're born with a certain character. You always see children, the ones who are already leaders at a very young age, while you have kids who are the shy following type. I do believe you can teach heart, but some naturally have it, while others can have it through tough times. The ones who don't have it even during tough times struggle. Some thrive on struggles, some thrive on the competition etc. Everybody is different.
