You spend $200 every weekend. That's 10k a year that could be saved.

Plug that amount in there and see how much money that is actually costing you fool.

Set up a fixed amount to automatically go out of your bank every month. Make it around a third of your pay check. Have it go into something doesn't need any work or research like index or mutual funds. Once you saved up enough take some out for down payment on a place to rent out. Renters pay off the mortgage.

That's a 2-4 year plan depending on how much you put in, where you live, market conditions etc. Can just keep repeating.

    Profit.

Repped. Unreal 10k could have been invested instead of going out and getting lit and wasting money. I have reduced that 200 to only one night a week. I use to go out 2-3 times. my goal is to cut that off and go out just once a month or two.

Dont make dumb decisions with your money. Aim to save 20% of your paycheck and use the rest for expenses. If your self control is bad then have it come out of your direct deposit automatically. Don't buy a new car if yours is working and dont rack up credit card debt. Pretty sure its too late to switch your living situation but never rent where its more than 35% of your income MAX.

Eating out everyday is just ridiculous and same with going out. I used to pay about $245 in rent (roommates) and was still broke cause of dumb decisions like that. If you made 100k you'd still be broke cause of how you make money decisions. Save now and enjoy that stuff later.
Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; and if it is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.

Easiest solution just go into your bank and setup an appointment with a financial advisor. Then get him to give you a break down of mutual funds that they manage. Look at what the best performing ones are, same with index funds. Then just have them set up your own trading account for you and buy into those funds yourself at home. That way you skip having to pay the 'management fees' banks charge for buying the same things you can buy yourself. It's easier than it sounds, once you got it done can set it and forget it.

You get to decide on a budget. It all depends on how strict you want to get. I'd start with necessities and how much debt you want to get rid of each month. Have some money set aside for fun.

No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.

Will def do more research on this. Like the brah said earlier i will go to a financial advisor at my bank and tell him to show me mutual funds, index funds and ROTH IRA plus 401k.

Originally Posted by redraider86 View Post
You'll be amazed what cooking at home and not going out every weekend will do for you. I'm not saying you can't have any fun, you totally can. Most Friday nights my friends and I do a potluck where each person brings one dish and a bottle of wine, and we get pretty hammered and play games (shoutout to Telestrations!) "But RR, that's not going out!" Yeah, obviously. So far, what has spending at the bars gotten you?

How are you spending 15 bucks a day on eating out? Even if you hate cooking, you can spend max 2 hours every Sunday day drinking/podcasting/meal prepping and have some decent options ready to go. Buy an Instant Pot, wait until Black Friday they're always on sale. I can make breakfasts for the week, chicken breasts for lunches (add to a salad mix I've prepared) or do a soup, then toss a few things in a plastic bag for dinners. Even if I have a super long day, I can toss something frozen in and 30 minutes later have a killer meal.

I make far more than you do and dropping 100 bucks on a weekend sounds insane to me. I still buy the things I want but I plan accordingly. Try to get into the mentality that instead of spending frivolously day to day, you're going to treat yourself once at the end of the month with all you've saved. And actually treat yourself, whatever sounds good to you. Last month was an Amazon Echo, this month is a massage + body scrub. I don't know what you're into, but it's fun to eat your home cooked chicken boobies and look forward to something.

Anyways. I put my max contribution into a Roth IRA.

    I max out my 401k.

Put whatever else I can into index funds.

I'm financially retarded and even I can do this. Work hard Sunday-Friday, get yucky with friends on Fridays and then prep for my week as best as I can with the remainder of my weekend.
I am definetly going to start doing that. Cook at home and avoid eating out every day, there is no excuse you are right i should find time instead of being lazy and eating out. I like the instant pot idea. Should save me a ton.

I just realized how stupid it is to go out and waste money at bars. The reason why it reaches a 100 a night is because I always take uber by myself which is costly but its better than driving drunk and hurting people/getting a DUI. Chasing woman and drinking away my money is a massive waste and im starting to realize that now. Thankfully I am realizing it now rather than later.

Thanks for the advise regarding the investments as well. I guess its definitely possible to retire at 50 if i play my cards right.

    Repped nvm on spread.

Pay yourself first. Automatic withdrawal into a savings account (probably some kind of low fee index fund) and you won't even notice it's gone. Start low if you need to but keep upping the % until you meet your goals. Bare minimum would be 20% for retitement imo.

    $15/day x 7= $105/week= $420/month
    $200/weekend= $400/month

You spend $800/ month on eating and going out. If this logic didn't occur to you then idk what else your wasting money on

Interesting observations. Will start doing that after paying rent/bills/etc will pay myself a fee then budget accordingly for entertainment etc.

Ya going out i am stop doing that. Should save me a few thousands in a couple month. Few thousands are better off invested.

    Thanks all.

Take your net income and save half. It's that easy.
"So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. . . . Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place." -Tecumseh

Read the blog, starting with the old ones. Don't bother with the more recent stuff, it's garbage.

Basically, you need to learn that buying **** doesn't actually make you happy - or, at least, it doesn't make you happy for long.

No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.
