Vulcan has some amazing looking shafts/knurling, but what's kept me from buying both the Absolute V2 and the Stainless Power Bar is their sleeves. I REALLY hope they redesign those in the future, would LOVE to add something from them to the lineup. But if I'm paying anywhere near $500 for a barbell it's going to be held to a higher standard with what I'm willing to tolerate. Especially when REP will likely have a $300-ish version with similar (if not the same) knurling AND silky smooth sleeves.I just hope they can figure out the hardness issue with cutting the knurling deeper, in the meantime the Mammoth is getting the job done

That's what I'm hoping will happen to REP's new stainless power bar, should put it somewhere between the Vulcan Absolute V2 and their more expensive stainless power bar. I NEED a bare steel stainless barbell, I'm enjoying the Mammoth bar but the cerakote has reduced the knurling from 'Grippy' to more 'Passive' compared to the original Super Power Bar. I'm finding it requires chalk to give it a secure feel, something I never had to use while pressing with the TPB. It's a BEAUTIFUL barbell though, stiff as hell and so far the Cerakote seems durable, but I just wish the passive knurling would have been more reminiscent of the prior version. If it had the blue/purple shaft while keeping the current specs it would be utter perfection.
I mean it’s a completely different knurl. The absolute SS is not the same bar as the absolute v2 just without a coating. Why they named the bars the same is very weird to me. If the SS bar was actually in black oxide it would be much more aggressive than the black oxide v2.

But I agree with you - a SS powerspeed should fall somewhere in between those.

I like the ribbing on the absolute v2. I like its uniqueness. And some like ribbing. I don't care either way myself. Like coop's review of the rep speed bar mentioned the lack of ribbing made it lesser quality for some reason. I don't think it changes the quality or is a feature of quality. It's a feature of personal preference .

Edit: oh, and the ribbing on the Vulcan SS PB was very mild compared to some other bars I have with ribbing.

I didn't think it was, I was just trying to say if you stripped off the coating it would likely narrow the gap that exists. Which is essentially what I'm looking for with my next barbell, a stainless steel barbell =/> Texas Power Bar knurling while satisfying my preference for smooth sleeves. My goal is to only keep two barbells for general lifting, the Buddy Capps bars funded the American Barbell. The Mammoth will likely be my daily driver for general lifting, then I hope to pickup a more aggressive/affordable stainless barbell that I'm not afraid to abuse. The biggest downfall with the Mammoth is also it's greatest attribute (as you probably know), it's a work of art. I find myself wiping it down every session, can't stand seeing chalk in the knurling, and it would break my heart if I somehow damaged that beautiful shaft. Fingers crossed REP can pull this off for $300 shipped, I would place my order the day it hit their website...

Knurl was amazing. Second favorite all time behind my Jessup PB.

The ribbing on the sleeve was interesting. You could see it but I could barely feel it. Felt smooth.

I feel like Black Friday deals are getting watered down. It's not terribly surprising because i personally think that running amazing Black Friday deals just trains people to ONLY buy at one time of the year.

I think a combination of competition and smarter business practice is getting companies to offer a longer black friday pricing period, or to offer mediocre products.

retail outlets can offer 'door-busters' i.e. a handful of items with very limited quantity and a super discount to bait people in the store, but i feel like online retailers have a harder time.

i've been out of the game for awhile though, so i could definitely be wrong.

The Vulcan Absolute black oxide grips really well. Not a deep knurl but a fine sharp knurl. Except the center is a mild knurl. More then passive. Despite that milder center knurl the bar grips really good on the back for squats. I've been using it for several months now and decided to swap it to my Ohio PB. I quickly liked the Vulcan bar even more and the Ohio less. The Ohio PB felt slick compared to the Vulcan BO PB. Especially as I was getting closer to and going over 400lbs. The milder knurl has been nice for front squats and just in case of nose/chin touching with over head presses.
OPB was my primary bar for around 2-years and I'm definitely a fan of it. However... I'm biased - and review coming - but after switching to the REP Powerspeed Bar... there's very little to keep wanting. If REP comes out with an SS version, I'll definitely upgrade, just for the looks.

Ah, I gotcha. And I totally feel you on the mammoth. I’m overly careful with it, along with a few others. Really looking forward to the hopeful release of the SS PSB in the relative near future.

On another note, getting closer to the AB 5000 series. Very excited about those.

Thanks for this. Without even seeing the bar, this matches my thoughts. I'd be a buyer at less than $300 inc tax and shipping. Seems unlikely. Wish Rep would make a deadlift bar. I bet it's coming.

Agree! I'm excited for those looking to pick one of these up, had I not just found my Cybex and invested money to upgrade the padding I would have been tempted. The AB-5100 looks FANTASTIC, I'm anxious to see what people think about their new and improved padding. The only other issue I'm concerned about is the adjustment angles, in the demo vid the pads never seem to line up well like the Legend or CAP+ bench. Otherwise it looks amazing, looking forward to your review

Bowflex is absolute garbage. Ironmasters or Powerblocks are the only ones worth getting.

Doubly second that..the 552s were my first purchase.good deal as Sears mismarked tag and I got them for $150 brand new. Plastic, plastic and more plastic.

Sold them and bought Troy steel hex set..never regretted selling them. Plenty of good Craigslist deals on dumbbells

    This^^

The only other potentially viable options for adjustable dumbbells are spinlocks and olympic dumbbell handles...but both have their downsides.

The plastic adjustables like Blowflex are poorly constructed, fragile, and horribly overpriced for level of quality you receive.

If you're looking for a decent budget option, there are a few different 200lb sets of spinlocks on Amazon for less than $200 shipped. That's 100lbs of iron per hand, for far less than that Blowflex trash. Hell, there's even a 200lb chrome set for less than $250 shipped.

I could see myself buying used select techs if they were super cheap. like $50 or less in like-new condition. the wife doesn't like the shape of the powerblocks and the more conventional shape would appeal to her more (though i doubt she'd still use them much). even if she didn't i would hope to flip them for a decent profit.

Is the external shape of Powerblocks that she doesn't like, or the shape of the grip? I bought my wife a set of the Sport 2.4 and the handle is nicely contoured and smaller in diameter, not straight and thick like the heavier models

Don't know about BF deals but Wayfair usually has it for under $300 including shipping. Haven't checked it lately but definitely worth a look.

The only ones with straight handles are the ELITES.
It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

Best way to get your hands on a cheap Buddy Capps TPB is thru eBay. Just wait for one of their 15-20% off promo codes and you should be able to snag one for around $230-250 shipped.

That may be true of the current models, but that wasn't always the case. The original "The Block" and "Personal Plus" handles were straight.

I have a set of the Personal Plus right now, with the straight, thick handles.

Along with my Pro-Rexan set, straight handles were the best!

What everybody else said. Save up for the ironmaster adjustable dumbbells, or better yet, scour the used market for a good deal and be willing to drive a few hours to pick them up. I just got a used set for $300 and am very impressed with how much they feel like a conventional pro style dumbbell.

I picked a used one up for $100 from an equipment wholesaler/reseller. Seems like too good of deal, what's the best way for a gym equipment novice to make sure it's the real thing?

of course, bare steel may not be for everyone since i haven't seen rust signs as of yet, and i've been doing maintenance at least once a week during the summer and less so during the colder months now...

Thanks to REP fitness introducing me the stainless steel power bar I think I am becoming an SS barbell whore. I have 3 in my arsenal and am eying up 2 more before the years end to purchase. My wife has a hard time understanding why I need so many bars that all 'look' the same. I just laugh. And no, she does not see the humor.
