Texas Strength Systems teaming up with Mark Rippetoe

From a post by Mark Rippetoe on his website:

"Wes Zunker and his staff at Texas Strength Systems are manufacturing a line of Starting Strength Equipment. I designed every piece, they are manufactured to the highest standards of quality in the industry, and they are fully warranted by TSS. They are not cheap, because they are the highest quality equipment available on the market. Coming soon: SS Flat Bench, SS A-Frame Plate Rack."

"Next project: The Starting Strength Bar by Capps Welding in Texas, makers of the Texas Power Bar."

The rack is ridiculously overpriced, a crap design, and not finished well. The bar is just the "All American Bar" but rebranded (not as good as Rogue). They also have a bench with a frame made from angle iron and the top is just plain wood... Lololol?!!

Oh my lord. They took an ancient channel rack design, intentionally left it uncoated to rust, equipped it with oversized bolts for j-hooks, then slapped an SS on the uprights for only $1,185 BEFORE shipping?

    Product line discontinued in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.......

There was a local shop here in Phoenix building racks to Mark's specs about 10 years ago. I think they were $600.

Now you can just buy a Rogue R-3 for $695 and be done with it.

I love it. I didn't know they had a sense of humor until now.
"Raw finish allowing the rack to age with its owner"

How long do you think they'll be able to convince posters on the starting strength board that someone would actually sell garbage like that?

I saw this a few days ago and thought that the rack release was the dumbest thing I've ever seen...why would I want to pay double for this when the Rogue rack is many times better and half the price?!?!

Second, what's the point to having Ripp's name on what's basically an All-American Bar for an up-charge...just makes zero sense to me at all!

I can get a rusted C channel rack on CL for under a $100. Waterman was local in the Detroit area and was building this identical rack cheap 20-30 years ago.

I could build that. 6x4 uprights, epoxy in some 1" inside diameter stainless pipe to hold your safeties. Pull up bar would have to be steel, but it would look pretty cool in brushed stainless.

I wouldn't do it for only 2k, but it could be beautiful. Problem is, it be a shame to scratch it up.

Even though I have respect for Mark Rippetoe, he’s still cocky AF. Cocky enough to think people will fork over that kind of money because he has his name affiliated with it.

Seriously I bought a power rack from this dude who wanted to get it out of his garage. I gave him $100 for it and he felt he was overcharging me

Wood bench? That looks incredibly uncomfortable. My thoracic spine hurts just looking at it. Looks like a locker room bench.

Where has Rippetoe discussed using a bench with no padding?

The advantage of my cushy fat pad is my scapula stay planted once they are retraced.

The same people that buy these are gonna be the same ones that pay for their online training at hundreds of dollars a year for a program that says add 5 pounds every time you touch the bar and done.

Try hundreds of dollars per MONTH... with a mandatory time commitment of several months.

They've turned into scam artists over the last year or two.

Not sure about current prices, but when they introduced online coaching 2 years ago, the minimum was $700 for 3 months, and $200/month thereafter. And they're in the process of starting a Starting Strength Gym franchise next year to pull in more revenue.

I suspect Rippetoe just wants to retire and is looking to cash out before he does. He's more or less given up training, apparently only doing a single set of squats every other week, interspersed with 2 sets of deadlifts per month. Not sure if he bothers doing anything for upper body.

People kid about GOMAD, but it seems Rippetoe's primary measure of success seems to be how much you weigh. Two of his big success stories he likes to parade around are two skinny kids that he turned into shapeless blobs. Rather strong blobs, but they look like reversed before-and-after pics. One of the kids became a SS coach and currently weighs in around 230. Rippetoe stated he wants him to gain another 40-50 pounds.

I was listening to his podcast and he was talking about the failure rate amoungst people getting certified to become starting strength coaches. It's nuts that people would even bother. couple thousand dollars with a near 90% failure rate plus writing multi thousand word thesis.

Really got to hand it to the guy he has created something out of the most basic program around.

That's a shame, was seriously thinking about making this purchase.

Used to be that low. Now days they'll pass just about anyone. Look how awful their new coaches are, and see how many of their good coaches have left...

Hell, they have an internship program to become one of their online coaches where YOU pay THEM! LMAO! What a scam.
