tell that to all the texas and ohio power bars worn smooth where they make contact with the metal rack hooks at the gym I go to

luckily not usually an issue except for the guys who grip wide for squats with the stands/mono hooks set in

In fairness to this manufacturer, anyone who claims that they could build and sell the pictured power rack for $300-$400 would find that they would quickly stop doing it after a short while. And picking up a similar rack on the used market (where there are people who will literally throw them away) does not impress me.

Exacty. I've come across many more bars with smoothed racking areas than I have worn-out hooks.

For a second there, I thought I'd stumbled into the misc rather than the 'equipment forum.'

Youse guise disparaging a legitimate product just because of it's ridiculously high price???

Clearly parts of this statement are wrong. The material cost difference for ProMaxima to use the heavier channel is going to be under $50, and they wouldn't have to powder coat it. It's also easier to manufacture than bolt together racks.

So an efficient manufacturer could build and sell it for $300 and make a profit. The reason not to is that in the weight lifting market, there's too little demand for products that are clearly inferior than their competition, much less inferior and 3 times the price.

Most definitely. Any rack that sells at a substantial premium with oversized BOLTS for j-hooks deserves to be viciously smeared (not to mention a wood top bench). That's before even factoring in the emotions stirred up by a company like TSS and a figure like Mark Rippetoe. Jimmies were bound to get rustled LOL

If you're performing weightlifting quick lifts then the farther out knurling might matter where the jhooks go. But then again it would be better off to have a dedicated bearing bar that wouldn't be used in a rack. Otherwise you're not going to be gripping where the jhooks go. To me I don't care if that knurl is worn down. There's a few bars out there specifically designed to not have knurl where the jhooks go. RepFitness just came out with one as well. I also personally don't care if the jhooks get scratched.

Unless you have a Kabuki bar that will saw through everything.

I've got a split sleeve York power bar that I use for bench. It's worn just about smooth everywhere. It slides around my jhooks like it was greased. I see no disadvantage here comparing it against my OHP.

but I visited one la fitness location with such ****ty bars the knurling was worn smooth everywhere. im not talking dulled down I mean completely smooth and gone like round bar stock. it was a disgrace.
Fwiw, there are some bars that ship that way, brand new. The Quest CT bar is one of them. The knurl on the one I looked at looked like it was done with an engraving pencil. Very, very shallow and too light to even be considered "mild", imho.

Have to spread reputation but this was funny.

I have some fond memories of lifting in old school racks like these. Most were super old and beat but functional enough. That said, I don't want one nor would I pay up to have one.

No, I don't mind the rack. Although for $1200 I think it's a rip off.

What I don't like is Mark Rippletoes and/or TSS.

Certainly some strange **** going on over there but....I have no doubt I could bench just fine on the wood. Don't care for 10", but it would work. Benched off the Super bench for years, way soft padding I was bottomed out every time I used it. Soft pad and cheap vinyl had no bearing on the situation IMO.

I've made it known I think EVERYTHING is overrated. Spin, knurling, straightness, sleeve slop, belts, leg drive, programming, sex

Played around over the years just to see. Pulled heavy DL with bars with smooth knurl. Been 90%+ on SQ and DL beltless. Even went 90% BP with legs up. All this during training sets, could go higher with dedicated 1rm attempt.

Internet age just causes analysis paralysis.

    YMMV

If you look at the equipment Old School monsters like Don Reinhoudt and Pat Casey used, it was primitive and not as overbuilt as a lot of the equipment of today but it got the job done.

I'm getting a house built right now. Just called the builder and told him I wanted the drywall raw. No tape, no mud, no paint. Only cost me 10k extra.

I agree everything expect for the 3 letter word.

As per programming, i think it is overblown due to SM and Internet but following certain system/routine definitely helps. Even before organized lifting ( say before 1920's) , ppl had certain routine/method who were into body building or wrestling or strong man stuff etc....
