    If we were lucky, the lady Athena would soon join us with her own NEW journal. Your vote will count, tell her how her presense here will change the world of us musleheads to greater one.

    How? It's actually simple, just stare at her with your most adorable and twinkling eyes because she's a sucker for a man with....

    She is our only hope with her big heart and loving soul.

    Yup. I'm a sucker!

    Okay, guys. I started it, so I have to stick with this journal for at least a month so Kaz can collect on his bets.

    Background:
    Pushing 53 years old
    Former Figure competitor
    Used to have a journal here but had it deleted when the atmosphere here changed

    Because of my *ahem* age, I avoid starchy carbs as much as possible. I did keto for a while but my body didn't like it, so I went to a Bulletproof diet, which is a bit more balanced, and my body was happy again. Lost quite a bit of weight in the first few weeks, and then my body adapted, as it usually does, and my weight bounced up a few pounds. I discovered that I had to keep it guessing by going on/off a keto-style diet from time to time...then it got used to my routine. Earlier this week, while doing everything right, I watched my ketones drop daily from *small* to *trace* to *neg*...so I went out and got a Burger King Whopper with cheese and a medium fries. It was yummy. Yesterday I had a chocolate dipped biscotti while having coffee with a friend and a big-ish serving of frozen yogurt. Back on the keto-style diet today.

    I'm tracking my BF along with weight since that's just the smart thing to do. I started lifting more seriously because I'd given it up for a while and lost muscle -- not a good thing for a woman my age. I'll track BF in a separate post.

    Also, I am a birth defect. Period, end of sentence. Lots of things wrong with me but mostly they don't show. I take what I can get every day and am grateful for it. My work schedule as a CNA/Nurse Delegate is about to change, so I have no clue how my workouts will look, but lately I've been trying for three days a week. I've been competing heavily against myself these past two weeks thinking I was going to post the workouts so even the idea of starting a journal was inspiring me to work a bit harder.

    Oh, and I'm a certified personal trainer and certified orthopedic exercise specialist...but I don't do that for a living any more.

    Ready? Set? Go!

    P.S. I do heavy, physical work. Right now, I'm responsible for rolling a 180+lb woman around in bed -- on an air mattress that she sinks into -- and getting her cleaned up, dressed, into the Hoyer sling, rolled over to her recliner...you get my drift. My new job will be "on floor" hours at a facility on top of this. But there are days when my delts are fried from holding her, strong-arm style, on her side while I clean her up...then I have to roll her to the other side and strong-arm hold her that way.

    So some days my workouts aren't as pretty as others, depending on how fried I am from the day before.

    Also, the weights are questionable. My hubby and I have cobbled together a decent gym with free stuff, found stuff and steel bars. So the bars I use are maybe 20lbs each...and we have spin locks, too. If you see my weights on bent over rows or floor deads, don't think for a minute that I'm using an Oly bar on those!! The hubby uses an ancient Oly bar that weights 50+ lbs, and we found two ancient 50+lb plates...you get the idea. We just don't have a lat pull machine, and are considering investing in something if we stay where we are through the winter...but if we decide to move, we don't want one more thing to move, ya know?

    Okay, now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

    10/11/18:

    45? min jog/hike/run
    out the back gate and up the big hill to the steep section that's painful...then run down the long side of that hill and all the way back home. good one today...pushed harder than usual.

    10/12/18:
    not much time for a workout in between shifts

    * pushups against the bench: 25 plus 25 -- wanted to toss my cookies on these. not the most i've squeezed out, but my arms were tired from work

    * incline flyes: 16lbs? - 5 (ouch); 15lbs? - 8, 8, 8

    10/16/18:
    long jog/hike run...similar route but a longer section and didn't log time, but felt strong

    * cross-bench db pullovers: 10lbs - 10; 15lbs - 10 x 4 sets
    superset with
    * UH grip BO BB rows: 30lbs - 10; 50lbs - 10 x 4 sets

    * standing rear flyes: 10lbs - 8, followed by four sets of 10 reps each

    10/17/18:
    did not want to work out today...stalled like crazy...hubby didn't want to work out, either, so we dragged each other to the barn and threw some weights around together

    * floor deads: 60lbs - 10 x 2 sets; 70lbs-10; 90lbs-5; 80lbs-8 reps x 4 sets

    * straight-legged deads: 60lbs-10 reps x 5 sets
    superset with
    * bodyweight lunges: 10 reps x 5 sets

    if my math is correct...i pushed 4,910lbs on floor deads today...last week i pushed 3,280lbs. so i'm happy. and it's all about meeeee!

    Welcome back. I understand a bit about crazy schedules - I'm often up before 4am to fit some of mine in. As long as we keep plugging away there is progress. Unless it's planned rest I try to go no more than 3 days before I get something in.

    Off to a good start journal wise!

    Ah, yes, those good ol' days, when I'd get into my 24-hour uber sleek local chain gym by 4:45 a.m. I miss those days sometimes! But I've worked at gyms for so long now that I haven't had to pay a gym membership in probably eight years...and the thought of paying for a membership makes me a little apoplectic. Plus, I'm broke right now. Plus again, we live in a small mountain town and have a super limited gym option...only one 24-hour gym in town and they don't have great equipment.

    So glad to be back at it, and happy to see you're back as well. We'll see how good it gets...I'm mellower than the days when guys were intimidated by me in the gym. There was that one day when I finished my leg workout in one of the power cages and as I was staggering away one of the guys asked me if I was done. He was standing about eight feet away, and as I replied I absently took a step towards him and he held up one hand as if I was going to fight him, said, "That's okay -- just checking if you were done, that's all!" Haha! Or the time I put the 45lb dumbbells back on the rack and one guy asked if I was done with them and I said, "Yeah, trying to stay light today," and he looked at me, pissed, and said, "REALLY?!" HAHAHA!

    But for anyone who's seen my contest photo, you're finding all that far more amusing than those who haven't seen my contest photo. I looked soooo not like an intimidating she-male, but more like a smaller Rachel McLish (my heroine!!).

    ~~ * ~~

    Rest day today. Legs are tired and a bit sore from yesterday's workout. Probably will stretch a bit this evening.

    Okay, let's see if the system eats this response or not. I had previously written a lovely response and included all kinds of info about my left hip and how great it feels after the cross-bench pullovers ...but that will wait for another day.

    Oh, you're growing up, too! I've been working on recognizing, identifying, and working through emotional traumas from my previous 48 years. I have to say my training isn't anywhere near Beast Mode! or even aggressive now. I'm so much happier with my life and my relationships. I don't feel a need to compensate by killing myself in the gym, and my wife and kids are much better off.

    Funny thing is, my belly fat is actually finally disappearing now. LOL

    I think the internal balance is having an external impact.

    Yes, that cortisol does amazing things that we don't like...get rid of the stress and the belly fat finds some place else to go...

    YES! I assimilated it onto my own tush and thighs! But with the help of a keto diet, I have released it to the universe...to go find someone else to haunt.

    ~~ * ~~

    My schedule is changing dramatically starting on Sunday. The extra hours I'm picking up at an assisted living/memory care facility are from 2pm-10pm...and I am NOT a night owl. So I've been forcing myself to stay up much later than my usual bed time these last few nights, and my hubby snuck himself and our Dinky Dog out of bed, shut the door, and let me sleep late this morning. Normally I'm out of bed by 5:30ish; I would consider getting out of bed at 6:00am or later as having wasted the day.

    So today's workout was later than usual, and my body is trying to figure out how to do this since I work out on a mostly-empty stomach. Back in the good ol' days, I'd pump myself full of 50mg-caffeinated gels (two of them) and down a big cup of concentrated coffee, then race to the gym before my brain exploded. These days, it's a cup of coffee with some whipped cream and maybe a tablespoon of almond butter pre-workout.

    I wanted something different today...

    Pushups against the bench: 15, 25, 20, 15
    ...stopped after just 15 on the first set because a dragonfly had gotten himself up high on the rafters near the plastic skylight-style covering...I opened one set of the big double barn doors and tried to "talk him down off the ledge", which of course, is useless. He beat his wings to shreds up there and will die tonight.

    Then I got inspired from Marius' journal (it was you, right?) when I mentioned my burpee/renegade rows/squat presses...decided to try some...

    burpee/renegade rows/squat presses: 10lb dumbbells - 6 reps
    ...my body hated these...my delts hurt from the pushups and my legs and glutes are still sore from Wednesday's workout and I whimpered a lot...then did more!
    ...followed by two sets of 8 yeah...they got sloppy towards the end...but it felt good to get back at it...

    baby weight iron crosses: 5# spinlocks, which comes to about 7.5lbs total - 8 reps...ooowwww; 5# dumbbells - 10 reps for three sets
    --superset with--
    incline flyes: 15# spinlocks - 8 reps x four sets

    ...my delts were on fire during those stupid baby weight iron crosses and i kept resisting the urge to curl up in the corner, crying softly.

    ~~ * ~~

    Today I go work with my 91-year old client -- only 2.5 hours today, 8 hours tomorrow, and then Sunday I work 5.5 hours with her followed immediately by a full 9 hours at the facility, then come home and collapse. My plan is to do a hike/jog/run tomorrow morning, but will have to take Sunday and mostly likely Monday off as well.

    Let's see how these delts hold up the next few days!!

    I have a soft spot for dragonflies. Good on you for at least making the attempt.

    When I built my wife's studio she insisted on a cupola with a little peaked roof and side windows. That seems to have become a trap for whatever gets in and forgets how to get out. It's high enough where I need an extension ladder to reach it. Last summer I rescued a hummingbird that was trying to escape though those windows. Took forever. By the time I got it down we were both exhausted. I can only hope things worked out well for it.

    You do interesting work, and season it with interesting workouts! Good luck on your delts!

    oh, i think about it allll the time. trust me. but i would need to put on 20-25 lbs of muscle again to effectively compete the way i want to, and at my age that would take several years. frank zane (yes, THE frank zane) once told me that women in menopause can see maybe 8 lbs of lbm gains per year if they work hard enough. i decided to prove him wrong a couple of years ago and nearly killed myself trying. i think i worked so hard i defeated my body's efforts to put on muscle. at this point in my life, i just want to lift and gain, and see how it goes. we can always compete when we're old and decrepit and in wheelchairs!

    this barn is not your average barn. the architect who designed the property we caretake made an estate-style barn, with lots of high, decorative windows. unfortunately, earlier this week i had a massive woodpecker in there. he knocked himself hard flying from window to window...wouldn't come down after i'd opened all the barn doors and side doors. he finally got himself confused over in the greenhouse and i managed to block him in a bit. i couldn't get my hands on him (didn't help that i was wearing my lifting gloves...) and at one point he managed to skirt around me and out an open door. my preference is to catch the birds, hold them and calm them before releasing them, but it is what it is. he left the barn terrified as bird poop.

    my work schedule has been crazy. last week, sunday's hours were 2p-10:30p; monday was 2p-1a. *insert sobbing emoji here* i'm trying to crawl back onto my diet but it's been tough. today's carbs have been lower, so far, than yesterday's. and since i only get a few minutes to eat at work and take my food with me, i'm looking forward to more hours at the facility so that my eating finally gets under control. and i hope you were right about the dragonfly. it's a much better thought than him dying in the rafters.

    i have stuck to my weight lifting since last week, but the cardio is falling off. i just don't like jogging or running later than 6:00a.m., and haven't gotten outside in time. i'll be hitting the bike trainer soon enough (no...not training wheels, kaz!!).

    hoping to get one good day of stretching/yoga in this week and am keeping fingers crossed i have the discipline to do it tomorrow. my spinal exercises have been non-existent and my hubby is concerned about the new twist forming in my lower thoracic spine, so a good deep tissue massage is on order as well as the yoga.

    workouts have progressed nicely and i don't have time to post everything here, so i'll just post today's.

    cross-bench close grip pullovers: 15# - 8, 10, 12!, 12!
    superset with
    standing rear flyes: 10# - 10 x 4 sets

    rope upright rows: (we have a lifting rope and attached it to a heavy chain, around which we hook plates...i stand on a wood box and go to it) 23#? - 10 x 4 sets
    superset with
    standing db overhead presses: 15# - 10, 10!, 10!!, and 8!

    remember that weights are approximate...but i don't care anymore.

    gonna take a short nap before work today. hope everyone has had a fantastic monday!

    cheers,
    athi

    Athena, thank you for the kind words. Seems as though all of us in our "mid life" (personally, I have just decided to start all over and do it right this time) are struggling with time, sleep, food and training. What moved us before, no longer moves us or has changed in priority. Key to our success isn't looking bigger, lifting more but being consistent. Praying that will be your goal.

    Keep on serving dear friend.

    At age 64, I've exceeded all my prior PRs. Not “over the hill” yet. :)

    Still haven't hit the bike trainer, with or without wheels. The weather has been too gorgeous, so I got out for a slow jog today instead.

    Thanks, pastor. I have thought of you frequently these past years. Did you continue your health and training program with your congregants?

    Haha! I don't want to turn this into a contest of its own!

    ~~ * ~~

    I tossed out my training notes because I need to get serious and get myself a little notebook today...and it's on the list now!

    This a.m. I finally got out for a jog in daylight. I got home from work around 10:45pm, and had settled myself before I left -- took some time with my LPN and the LPN coming on duty to review stuff and unwind, so I came home relaxed (I always come home happy -- I LOVE MY NEW JOB!!) and slept well.

    Jogged just under 3 miles. New route today and went down a gentle decline on a winding road...so coming back felt like climbing a mountain. Pleased that I pushed hard when I needed to and took short breaks when I needed to. Then home to take a long, leisurely walk in the pastures with my hubby and our dog. Our little dog relies on this near-daily walk with her pack. It makes her so happy...she ran a circle around me today as we were headed back and played with me! <3

    Then into the barn for a quick workout.

    Pushups against bench with scapula presses: 10 reps for 5 sets -- my pecs are gonna feel this tomorrow...
    flyes with leg raises: 12# (actual weight slightly higher) for 10 reps and 3 sets -- my abs weren't angry until the last few reps of the last set...my pecs are another story all together.

    ~~ * ~~

    I gave my notice with my 91 year old client's daughter last weekend and it did not go well. She yelled at me for quite some time. I let her cool down, then talked to her calmly the next day. She was contrite, but it made my decision easier -- I feel bad about leaving, but not quite so bad as before she yelled at me. My goal is to be out of there by the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

    I love my new job. I've told them I will begin my LPN studies next year, which made them very happy except that they lose me as a CNA/Nurse Delegate and Med Tech. It makes me happy because they will help pay for the schooling. Hoping to start getting some more hours by the end of the month.

    How our lives changes when we get older and wiser, eh? Having spent 30+ years in the corporate world and being thrown under the bus for having a moral compass time and again...chasing higher degrees...chasing titles...to leave it all behind, go into orthopedic exercise and caregiving...and now nursing...and I am the happiest I've ever been.

    Have a wonderful weekend, peeps!

    I have continued on with Get Fit For The King. Currently I am the youngest in the gym, will be 55 next month. Our senior member is 86 years young and some days puts us all to shame. Two of these seniors have competed with me in Powerlifting Meets in the last two years. Both hold State records and the female member holds multiple National and World records for her age and weight class. They all fight me on the nutrition side of things, but over all, they all have made huge progress.

    It is funny how our lives often take us down paths we never would have thought of in our younger years. I am glad you are happy and have found a way to work and serve.

    My baby sis, glad to hear "near-daily walk with your PACK" (you, hubby and dog) give you a moment of happiness.

    Good luck on LPN study, it's about time for you to get what you truly deserve. Let it be, they might lose their star CNA/Md tech but they certainly know they will be rewarded by far greater gift than what they lose. We are all rooting for you! I will always rooting for you!!!

    Meanwhile, whenever we miss you, here in your journal, I will clean the place, do the laundry with bamazav (pastor!?)'s help...though he has a little problem remembering garbage collection day, and we have Mark to do all the muscle works, Dave to organize the things, Grouchy to mow the lawn, Marius and his beautiful wife to tend the flowers and plants, so you have nothing to worry about.

    So pray enjoy being yourself whenever you get a chance.
    As long as you are fine, the world is fine, should know that.
    We friends know what you really need.
    You yourself are the one who should know that.
