Thinking about building a new rig

My desktop is ~8 years old. My kids just use it for homework and games (fortnight, minecraft, etc). Tired of them complaining that some things don't work right (I work in IT, built my first rig when I was 15 back in 1995, not a newb)

Anyhow, budget is abut $1500 and this is what I came up with. Thoughts?

looks good. if you want to save a few bucks here is a $389 1070ti, as well as a $290 1070. its not like fortnite needs the best of the best for juicy frames. Also you can find 1800x for under $200 recently or even the 2600 for like $150

The RTX 2070 is supposed to be ~500 retail and beats out the GTX 1080 from the early results I saw on YouTube today. It uses less power and puts out less heat also, while giving you some Ray Tracing and Tensor cores so you can at least enable some of the upcoming eye candy in games that support it.

You probably don't need a 750w PSU either unless you plan to overclock a fair amount. Finally, that Corsair Hydro Series HG10 doesn't work with any of the components you've selected. That's a fairly old bracket used for the GTX 700 series/AMD R9 290 series cards. I'm guessing by the fact that you grabbed a pair of H100i V2's that you were planning on using one with the HG10 on your video card, but that won't work, and I doubt the case you selected has room for a pair of 240mm radiators.

If you want to water cool your GPU (and decide to stick with the 1070 Ti), you'd firstly need a reference card to water cool it (usually). That card you've selected is not reference design (from the look of it anyway, I'd have to find out the exact serial/model # and Google it to verify). Usually reference cards are the 1st ones that get launched (ie, "Founder's Edition", or cards with a blower fan).

So, if you decide to get the 2070, you can drop one of those liquid coolers, and drop the HG10 entirely. If you decide to stick with a 1070 Ti, ensure it's compatible, and then get a mount like an NZXT G12 Kraken + a 120mm AIO cooler that's compatible with it, instead of a 240mm like the H100i v2, which I'm pretty sure doesn't work with any AIO brackets (because of the shape of the water block).

Yeah, I was thinking at some point I might get my kids an occulous rift and I want it to be able to run it. If I can build one that is decent for VR for less, I'm all for it, but the min specs are barely lower than what I spec'd out, so not sure it's worth saving a few hundo.

I'm also going to wait for cyber Monday and black Friday to get some good deals.

I didn't even think about looking at the new RTX, but being able to drop the cooler and bracket would pay for it.

I actually meant to put the HG10 980, it will work with a 1070 ti with minor mods, but I'll also double check the compatibility. The case does support two 240mm radiators.

If you dialed your CPU back to a 2600 or a 2600x, that'd save you another $100 and you'd still be fine for gaming.

    Get a cheaper PSU = ~$20 saved (like a 600w instead of 750w)
    Losing the 2nd AIO cooler = $90
    -----------------------------------------------
    ~$210 saved

Do you have a copy of Windows already? I didn't see an OS listed in the build $$. If not, that's $90 for Win10 Home 64-bit. You'd still have enough for the RTX 2070 though. They're supposed to be pretty cool running chips.

honestly its probably a waste even thinking about the 2070. Were probably not seeing the $500 msrp for a while, and if hes waiting anyways he can probably find a low $400 or even high $300 1080. BTW op you missed out on a $272 1070ti 2 days ago lmao!

Looks like 2600 may be the way to go for now. My intention is to upgrade the CPU in ~4-5 years to the latest chip that will fit AM4 and possibly upgrade the graphics card at the same time, which is why I am going with AMD.

Yeah I have win 10 on the PC I am replacing.

Yeah initial availability of the 2070 will be a chitshow (as it always is with new GPU's), and the price gouging assclowns will be out in full force. I guess it depends on what kind of a rush OP is in. If he can wait, he can grab a 2070 or even a 2060 which will surely be more than powerful enough for VR at a lesser cost, but again.. lack of availability and initial price gouging by 3rd party resellers can make it difficult to get GPU's at initial launch.

Just found this on ebay. The guy built it a month ago for $1400. Asking $1000. I think it might snag it and upgrade the vid card later if I need to and/or put the vid card in my old computer and find a used 1070 ti for this one.

    Ryzen 7 2700x processor

    Cooler master master case h500p

    Asus rog strix b450f motherboard

I just built the machine on pcpartpicker.com and could do no better than $1500. Not bad. Not bad!

I can also upgrade my current desktop to a Intel q8650 with 8GB ram for about $60 and it will play fortnight with the RX 580. Now my kids won't have to fight for a computer.

Now, just gonna wait until the 2070 drops so I can get a cheap 1070 ti GTX.

    1. GPU now? a moment before next generation? I know prices of new RTX is a bit higher, but these are MSRPs
    2. Consider waiting for 9th generation Intel CPUs + Why Ryzen 2700? how about the lower end parts? you really need that much cores? games don't use it

I just couldn't pass on this deal(read update) because it's more than enough for what I want it for and I was building a similar system for $1500. I don't really care if some of the parts are a bit outdated, but, in reality, the only outdated hardware is the HDD and Vid card and both are still decent. The mobo is also just a slightly dumbed down version of the x470. It preforms nearly as good.

Like I mentioned before I will probably put the RX 580 in my q9650 (currently has a HD5770) and see if it makes a difference on that and get a slightly better card like the EVGA 1070 TI hybrid for this rig which the price will probably drop more in the next month. I may also put the 860 EVO in the old machine and buy a 970 evo for the new rig. Right now the old CPU biggest bottle neck is 100% the HDD as it is only a 7200 RPM. But hey, I got the PC free 8 years ago from my old job. Optiplex 755 MT that I modded to fit a 500w psu and the HD5770. If not, I'll just keep that computer dedicated for my kids doing their homework.

I wanted the AMD because in 4-5 years I can buy the latest greatest AM4 CPU for cheep.

They don't. School and sports come first and I limit thier time. I have 3 boys and they all want to take turns playing.

I'm also taking this time to teach my older son how to build computers. He's in 7th grade in and in a computer club, so I thought it would be neat to show him.

I've also thought about upgrading my Rig as its finally starting to show signs of aging when playing PubG.

    i7 2600k (Oc'd to 4.4Ghz) watercooled
    GTX 970
    8GB RAM

Idk if to just upgrade my card... or go for the whole Mobo/CPU/GPU upgrade. Just figured I might as well try and get another year out of the old gal.

I DO NOT DO 4k Gaming or VR or any new games that don't include PvP. So PubG, Dota 2, WoW, things like that.
    Are you not entertained?

It's been a while since I've done any bench marking to figure out whether its the CPU or GPU that is the bottleneck, but I believe if as you raise the resolution/quality you watch the CPU and GPU %. When the CPU is maxed out and the GPU is not, the CPU is the bottle neck and once the GPU is maxed and the CPU isn't, the GPU is the bottle neck.

    Update

+$95 - Found a Cool Master ML240R for the Ryzen
+335 - Found a like new EVGA 1070 FTW Hybrid (Now I can throw the RX 580 into my q9650.)
    +$55 - Found a 500GB SSD for the q9650

SO I was basically able to get a new PC and upgrade my old one for $1400.

When I get it all done I'll post benchmarks for both PC's. Interested to see if upgrading my 10 year old PC made a difference.

Any of you have a Radeon RX GPU?

I'm having a weird issue where soon after I start up a game like Fortnight the screen goes black and I have to hard reset. Forums say to tweak some power settings underclock the card. It seems like an overheating issue to me. Because the card will show ~35c before it crashes, but when I touch the card it's legit hot. And I never hear the fans max out. Like the temp is spiking so fast the fans don't have time to spin up before it crashes.

The seller said he never had this problem... but I'm pretty sure it's something with the hardware and not a driver issue.

I finally figured out that it was a sag issue on the RX 580. It was not getting a good connection to the PCIe slot. Once I supported the back of the card it was fine.

I ended up throwing in a GTX 1070 Hybrid in the 2700x and overclocked it. My 3D passmark score is now 13500+. I also overclocked my ram and it is now hitting 2700. I overclocked the CPU to 4150 on all 8 cores, but it did not yield any higher scores.

The RX 580 doesn't fit on my old Dell 755, so I hit up work to find out if they had any old desktop's they can give me. I got a Dell 3020 i5-4570/8gb RAM that I will throw the RX into and replace the 755. I'm just waiting on a 500w power supply to come in.

I can probably sell the 755 for $100 on ebay. It plays fortnight on fairly decent res on a 22" monitor. Def playable, so that should get some people interested.

Installed a few games and already running out of disk space, so I decided to buy another 500GB 860 evo 2.5 SSD for $50 shipped that I will raid 0 with my current HDD, and a 256GB PM961 NVME, which I believe is a 950 evo, for $53 shipped, that I will use with StoreMI.

This should double or triple my HDD score and give me 1.25TB.

Nice looking build man. FYI, I have the same CPU cooler as you (but mine's 120mm, it's for my ITX system). You can connect that CoolerMaster RGB controller module to your motherboard via USB header, and then control the CPU and fan colors through an application in Windows. That'll allow you to put the module behind your cable management partition and make your build look a bit cleaner (if you care about that sort of thing).

Thanks. Yeah, its plugged into the USB, I just haven't installed the software yet. I need to do that.

I wish the headers were 4 pin instead of 3, so I could just plug it onto my motherboard and use Aura to control it.

I have the same problem with my MSI board. "Mystic Light" requires 4 pins on that board, so I control my 2 fans, Phanteks HALO, case RGB & RAM with the MSI software, and the CPU with the Cooler Master application. I wish MSI made a decent looking water cooler that worked with the 4 pin setup.

That was my old case and i would recommend a different one, it is big and bulky (not a problem), just poorly designed, poor cable management, and the tinted glass is way to dark. So if you're worried about seeing your build/parts I would not recommend the case.

Also sense you're already at the 300$ range for cpu's id get an i5 8600k considering the water-cooled setup, it is much better for overclocking.

Or get a 212 evo and save 90 dollars on the cpu/cpu cooler.
