My grip strength is becoming a limiting factor on a couple lifts. I do think my grip strength needs quite a bit of work since my grip is starting to fail at to light of a weight
For example I had trouble gripping the bar for my full set of 8 while only deadlifting 315lbs.
I'm doing a upper/ lower split on mon, tues, thurs, fri. I'm thinking of just using straps on leg day and throwing in a grip exercise on upper days.
Thoughts?

There is some personal decision making involved.
What grip are you using? Double overhand, alternate? Ever use a hook grip? What bar are you using? Chalk?
You can certainly do grip training separate, there's no reason to sacrifice your deadlift (or add to injury risk) due to grip limitations.
I assume you won't be competing in powerlifting, as that would be the only time not using straps might really matter.
After doing as much as possible with normal grip, good bar (if accessible), chalk...the next choice is generally to either use an alternate grip (one hand palm in, other hand palm out, most people turn their support hand palm out) or use straps.
The pro to the alt grip is that you are holding the bar without strips, the pro to straps is that you basically eliminate the chances of rupturing the distal biceps tendon on the palm-out side.
