I'm still on chapter 3 but think I'm near the end of it, just got through the part to escape the O'Driscolls' setup. I wonder how much I've already done in free roam, because I robbed Chez Porter early on and just robbed it again in a mission. I've already robbed the O'Driscoll ranch/hideout twice in free roam.

I recommend doing the pink missions on the map until you rank up high enough to get some ability cards. By rank 24 you can get Slow & Steady and I think Rank 28 may be a good match for it with The Unblinking Eye.
The reason you can't kill some people is because they have cards activated and it makes them stronger. Some people are basically unstoppable if they know you're coming. Look at their ranks to see what I mean. You'll see ranks in the 100s, which means they've play ALOT.
Also, shoot every animal you see, even if you don't skin it or take it to the butcher. Every kill in the game is XP for ranking up.trainingwithryan.substack.com

Online seems to be totally about grinding. IMO, they should make things you hunt and find worth a little more money because you go out on a hunt for 20 minutes and come back to make $20-30.00. Meanwhile, an upgrade to a card is $350 for the first tier and I think $750.00 for the third tier.
If you have a life away from gaming, you're never going to stand a chance against the hardcore gamers. Luckily there are plenty of people like you who are just starting up to join up with.
I also recommend forming an open posse right away each time you play online.trainingwithryan.substack.com

If you are using the vermint rifle against higher rank players, the chances are they are using both slow and steady and never without one, and it takes one head shot just to knock off their hat (never without one- protects you from one headshot while wearing hat) and then they activate slow and steady (immune to headshot insta kill) and it takes multiple varmint rifle shots to kill them because headshots no longer outright kill. When tested I have seen anywhere from 7-12 headshots required to kill with the varmint rifle once someone is in slow and steady.
The counter to this is use the lancaster repeater or the bolt action rifle or springfield so you need less shots to kill. A rifle will kill in 2-3 body shots regardless of ability cards used for defense.
The bottom line is a high rank player has 3 passive cards, all ranked up to tier 3 and simply outclasses a low rank player in terms of power due to the ability cards and also probably having hours of practice in pvp. Make sure you look at peoples rank before you start conflicts you wont be able to handle. Dont grief people who are hunting or just logging in and idle, because I know as a high rank player myself, I immediately go dumpster the person who did that for as many kills as it take to get them to leave session or parley to teach them the lesson that you dont simply go shooting everyone you see in free roam.
If you really want to shoot everyone and gain ranks quickly enter large showdown pvp lobby and practice while you rank up. You wont win much until you get higher rank, but the rewards are still worth it and thats the place to hone your skills. For every man, there is a sentence, a string of words, that has the power to destroy him

I think it's pretty fun. The grind for money is a little slow for my taste, but I'm still putting in time on it when I want something to do.
For instance, upgrading an ability is $500.00 and that can take hours to earn through hunting and missions. You have to do that a couple of times for each ability and you eventually can have up to four abilities activated at once. You can see how that would add up.
I still like the overall experience though.trainingwithryan.substack.com
