Excess protein calories get stored as fat... TRUE or FALSE??

I've heard so many different answers I don't know which one is more accurate or even truly researched. I thought that generally any excess calories someone intakes, regardless of what macro, get stored as body fat. But now some say that your body can't process too much protein at once, and any excess protein you intake just gets sh*t out of your system and not absorbed entirely.

Anyone know which answer is more scientifically accurate/proven? I've googled like a madman but still not clear on what is what has been confirmed about excess protein intake

The body will almost never store protein as fat as that pathway is rarely used. Excess protein will be excreted.

OP, you are getting mixed up between the actions of individual pathways and how the body works as a whole to influence net bodyfat turnover.

Protein is almost never stored as fat other than in extreme and usually silly hypothetical scenarios.

HOWEVER, the presence of protein in your diet can affect whether you gain or lose net bodyfat - in the same way that carbs do. So it does indeed come back to calories in vs calories out.

And if you try to cheat the process by consuming no dietary fat then the body WILL use pathways like denovo lipogenesis - ie. converting carb into fat.

If you ate nothing but protein and you went over your net maintenance calories day in and day out for months on end you'd gain fat. That scenario however would be as unrealistic as those who argue that if you ate nothing but donuts for a months but were in a deficit you'd lose fat.

It's very difficult for the body to store protein as fat however protein DOES contain calories and needs to be added into the cals in and out equation so you can't just not count it.

I don't like your attitude and how it implies my all egg-white diet isn't going to get me ripped.

    kindly leave! ;o)

So if I understand correctly, the body will only store excess protein as fat in cases where it's a last resort? i.e., starvation mode or complete lack of other macro nutrients?

Yep. That's that mythical condition in which we never lose any more weight, even though we completely quit eating altogether. It's followed shortly by the "Body Runs On Nothing But Thin Air Mode."
