First Toys R Us....Now EAS.... will more giant supplement companies follow the suit?

    From Stacked:

One of the longest-running supplement companies in the industry EAS, has stopped production and discontinued all of its products. Just to be clear this includes every EAS branded supplement from its on-the-go protein RTDs to its various powder products.

The announcement was officially made early last week on Tuesday the 26th of June by the parent company of EAS, Abbott Nutrition. EAS was a giant brand, to say the least, with a long list of supplements released over the years and availability in a number of countries.

Very sad news ... considering this was the first supplement I ever used way back in 1996. Like others said, once the Phillips brothers sold it then it was only a matter of time. But it sure held on for a long time after that.

Id say it's an end of an era but as mentioned before the company went to crap once Bill sold it. I used to love their products and the last thing he made before the hand off was the creatine chews.... initially they were good but once under new management they went to crap. Haven't used anything they make since.

I think that the industry has a ton of smaller companies that will end up being consolidated into some of the bigger brands (Hi-Tech for example buying up iForce + others, Nutrabolt buying Scivation etc) but overall I think this has more to do with the fact that the parent company that owns EAS is a major player in the medical industry. They own brands like Ensure, Pediasure and Similac in the brick/mortar side of their products and likely didn't want to compete anymore against some of the other people anymore.

Looking briefly at their quarterly filings and their 2017 report it shows the nutritional supplements portion of their portfolio only grew 0.6% YoY, with the only major improvement was their Ensure brand outperforming so EAS was likely operating at or near a loss for them.

Taking it a step further, they point out that:

In the Nutritional segment, the research and development process
generally focuses on identifying and developing ingredients and
products that address the nutritional needs of particular popula‑
tions (e.g., infants and adults) or patients (e.g., people with
    diabetes).
So it just seems like EAS isn't an industry they care to be in anymore. Wouldn't surprise me to see them sell the brand off to a private equity firm or one of the bigger sport nutrition companies.

I don't think Amazon wants to put any supplement company out of business. They have their own private label and have been slowly entering the market from a private label stand-point with their handful of single ingredients products + their newer basic entry-level pre-workout but I don't see them eliminating supplement companies. They've never really ventured into the FMCG (Fast-moving consumable good) side of the market as it doesn't seem to provide the margins they want compared to items like AWS or Kindle or Kindle Books.

They already have an incredibly powerful infrastructure setup to handle warehousing, fulfillment, returns for merchants and that's the area where I see them really hurting other eCommerce shops like BB.com + others that I can't list because of the rules.

With their acquisition of Whole Foods + incredibly well-leveraged logistics powerhouse, I'd venture a guess they look at a company like Costco & go for that route.

1.) Increase the Amazon prime subscription base/cost by leveraging existing Amazon Fresh infrastructure & use Whole Foods stores/warehouses in a Hub/Spoke network model
2.) Offer in-house deliveries (aka - why they just bought Ring) with this subscription or charge a premium for the in-house delivery option
3.) Focus on the high margin FMCG that pair well with your existing offerings in the Amazon Fresh/Whole Foods world (Vitamin C, Magnesium, Tumeric)

Why bother with trying to enter a new business vertical in FMCG outside of the common basic ingredients that people buy at the store (Vit C, Magnesium, etc) when you can instead take a good piece of the pie from your merchants by handling warehousing, fulfillment, and returns in the same manner you've been doing for the last decade?

The scary part about facing Amazon is not the existing infrastructure or the brand recongition nor the resources they can pour into things. It's the fact that it's not a level playing field when Jeff Bezos doesn't give a **** about making money on a new venture as long as it continues to grow/scale accordingly. That's where it gets impossible to compete with Amazon when you factor that into the equation.

Yeah, the first attempt at the in-house didn't work out well for them because people were wary of letting some random stranger in their own. I still think it's an uphill battle for them, but I can imagine where they build something like Ring into a subscription model but give the hardware away for free/very cheap.

For example, sign up for Amazon Fresh In-House deliveries and get a Ring doorbell for $20. They'd also likely tag each of their delivery agents with some form of tracking, and they would be able to tell where the person went within the home. They're building on the long-game of people not wanting to go to the store and wanting that immediate gratification.

The greater point I was making was that Amazon doesn't want to kill any company that can be a merchant of theirs, but they do want to eliminate people going into stores as much as possible.

They have the incredible infrastructure to dictate how the industry responds in many cases.

Would you pay a 5% premium on groceries & $1 more/month for prime to have groceries delivered on a schedule inside your home? $5 more/month? $10 more/month? $20 more/month? It's really interesting because I enjoy going to the store but yet, if it's an extra $200-500/year for deliveries to be on my counter without me having to make time for the store the gas/time savings almost even out. Even if I'm just setting up the subscriptions to have eggs, bread, milk, apples and other common items delivered to my home so I'm only hitting up Costco or local places for getting my meat that's easy to only go to the store every 2-3 weeks.

They are just building this behemoth where you almost have to use their eCommerce checkout & fulfillment because that's the only way you can compete with the other merchants/brands on Amazon.

The only supplement companies I see not going with Amazon are those who 1.) can't sell their products on Amazon i.e. I'm not sure Amazon would allow some of Hi-Tech's PH line to be sold 2.) They don't or won't adapt to a direct-to-consumer model and prefer to go through distributors (which Amazon is basically just that)

I cant find anymore backing on this to confirm that this is true. Nevertheless, that does stink.. EAS was a pretty solid company, I love the Myoplex RTD's and I really look forward to going to the EAS booth every year at the arnold expo, they always had something new.

I'm just confused as to why they are supposed to be introducing new supplements i.e. the shred protein reported by Stack3d...

EAS was the first protein powder I used.. and I abused phosphagen HP like it was going out of style in high school Fruit Punch, loved it!

In my opinion their brand got watered down when they went mass market though they did have a long run at it. It's a common marketing mistake to try to be everything to everyone.

Yeah, once Bill Phillips sold his stake in the company EAS along with their magazine muscle media, just went downhill. But man, EAS supplements were some of the first I ever took....sad to see them go.
Any information I give you is just that, information; it is not the permission to take any supplement or partake in any illegal activity.

Very sad times when a supplement company that was around that long finally folds up shop. I can't say I didn't see it coming (no one really uses EAS anymore) but still sad none the less.

Not surprising, they did nothing to stay relevant. Tbh, I'm still amazed MusclePharm is still afloat.

He wasn't the first though. The first were the 1997 Denver Broncos guys (since they were a Colorado based company) and it was Bill Rominowski and Shannon Sharpe

Good memory though, Brady Quinn was part of the athlete team.
