Back felt like **** yesterday after Sundays deads and squats. Woke up and it still felt like ****. Went in to the gym not thinking I could make it through the scheduled squat session. Took my warm up really seriously, was feeling ok so I went for my working sets...ended up having an awesome squat session hitting a joker set and pulled some mid range deadlifts afterwards. Back felt freaking great after that, like a new man. An hour sitting at my desk and it's starting to feel not so great again. Whats the culprit here? Continuing to push my lifts? Or this desk job?

Desk job. It's almost always the desk job.

Not sure if your familiar with Chiropractors that have you do traction, but imagine sitting in an non-ideal position for hours on end and what that does to everything over time. I get the same issues with my lower back. I make a ton of progress on Deads and Squats, then some smaller supporting muscle gives way and I have to take time off. I'm trying to focus on my posture at work and theragun daily to make sure things don't lock up causing other muscles to compensate.

I hear that. I can't imagine sitting at a desk 8 hours a day is even remotely good for us. I def have to start focusing on posture at work as well. I make a point of getting up and walking around every hour, but I def have a tendency to slouch at my desk. On the plus side my squats are starting to feel pretty good again. I'm hoping I can get my max back up to the mid 400's again within 1-2 months and then gradually inch towards my 500lb goal.

Look into your desk chair. A lot of chairs are not designed for back support but just as a back. Many places don't want to put that kind of investment in a chair for 10,000 employees so they get something cheap. I don't know what yours is, but chairs do matter in that kind of setting.

I spent 130$ for a "cheap" office chair and it is still serving me well after 10 years.

Our chairs are def not top of the line but there is a degree of lumbar support. Prob worth speaking with the owner to see if I could expense a nice one. Appreciate the feedback.

I'll say both. If your back is giving you problems, pushing squats and particularly deadlifts to the edge is IMO and IME more likely to hurt than help (too much on the PR/AMRAP set, jokers, too heavy of supplemental, etc). I think somewhere in there you cross from helping by strengthening and blood flow and ROM and all that stuff into hurting from the stress, so to speak, esp with the straight bar deadlifts.

But, and you have an idea on my back history, the single worse thing for my back has been sitting for long periods of time uncomfortably and not properly supported, particularly driving in poor seats...but...doing so within a day or so of deadlifts was the real problem, maybe something about sitting in the car/at your office desk/etc, with so much fatigue...IDK.

Try a lumbar support pillow like they sell in airports etc.

Def truth to this. In many ways squatting and deadlifting feels very good for me, but I push beyond the point of it just being good for me. That's for sure.

#1, health. Lifting forces me to eat much healthier than when I'm not doing any training. The lifting itself has a positive health impact, but mostly it's the corresponding motivator to mostly eat well. If I eat like ****, I feel like **** when I train, and waste my time and effort with mediocre or poor gains, can't be having that.

I used to be on 3 daily prescription medications. I have been on 0 prescription meds for several years now. Diet and exercise are amazing things (even when I took time off, my diet wasn't as bad as it had been as I kept some of the practices I learned)

#2, I dislike being small/weak. Not that I'm big or strong, ever was, or ever will be (inconsistency + lifetime actual natural), but I'm a hell of a lot stronger and more fit than I would be if I didn't lift. Just, intrinsic, even if not applied in any practical sense. But...see #3

#3, strong people are harder to kill than weak people and more useful in general. Self explanatory on both counts, I hope. I mean, even something as simple as picking up my dog when he's injured or sick to lift him into a tall vehicle and take somewhere...a lot of people would not even be able to do such a simple thing without getting help. Hell a lot couldn't do it (safely to themselves and dog) if the dog was standing on his own power right next to the car. Moving. Furniture. All kinds of daily stuff. Life is just better when you are fit, strong, or both. So, quality of life.
have you taken off lately? or have not since you bought all the nice equipment? *drools*

I've worked in an office setting for almost 20 years now (IT work) and sitting does take it's toll on you over time. I've tried multiple chairs and not much has helped. Just concentrating on your posture at your desk and also frequent chiropractor appointments is the only thing I've found that somewhat helps.

But yeah everyone thinks "Oh you have a cushy office job ..." which in a way I do, but a price comes with that as well.

I would be willing to bet that with the rise of smartphones - a rise in back problems has found it's place in today's society.

Short answer, yes but not severe time off.

I got the new mostly Rogue setup just about two years ago, Black Friday 2016. I was consistent and just barely set lifetime bench, press, and dead PR's spring/summer of 2017 then we moved Nov 2017 which meant time off and poor eating etc, but not too terrible I guess, started back early this year and did okay, then took IDK maybe a couple months of not doing a lot and 3 weeks of nothing at all before getting more serious again which is where I am now. Actually in the middle of a session as we speak.

I'm doing a new type programming for me, in week 4. Classic Heavy/Light/Medium, specifics written by Andy Baker.

    Light day today. Front squat 240 5x3, press 140x5x5, dead 295 4x5

(the front squat and press are done 'heavy' but count as light compared to bench/back squat primaries)

Office job for 10 years and I cannot say I have the best posture, but I am sure to get up and go for 20mins walks 3 times a day if possible. No back issues to speak of, but man my shoulders are in rough shape, not due to sitting long periods of time.
Progressive overload + progressive eating = gains. Simple as that!

Mild venting I suppose on two things........

-Coming up with a cool concept of peanut butter with a fat blocking enzyme which makes the peanut butter something like 25 calories for 2 tbsp. Apparently it's real peanut butter. Lets sell a 11-12 serving jar for $12.00 per jar. ProjectAD Professor Nutz for anybody unaware. F U for that price point + shipping cost. Won't buy regardless of reviews and my love for peanut butter. Innovative, yes. Cool, yes. Worth the cost, F no.
Bikini chicks will love this I suppose

-Smaller supplement companies that seem to frequently be out of stock because they cannot re-order for production in a timely enough manor. Nothing says "don't buy my brand" than not having the items for me to order pretty much every time I check the site. This isn't regarding one specific company, but many smaller ones I've ran into this problem with. Don't care how good of products you produce....if you're going to be a d!ck like that to your customers, then I'm going to find another brand that doesn't have this.

Can't wait for that enzyme to not work as well as claimed and people get ghost bulked.

Its fact. Necks are supposed to be curved; instead, they're being straightened. Also, our collective eyesight is going to suffer. Then there's cancer:

Pavel Tsatsouline, the kettlebell guru, says for every hour of sitting, you need to do 10 heavy swings to counter it. Work an 8hr day? Minimum 80 swings a day.

    Don't **** with Pavel.

Donnie Thompson's Bowtie has been a nice add to wear on the commute home from work or during walks around the block.

I've kept my hips loose using Limber 11, do 100 band pullaparts a day after the hip mobility, and take several ten minute walks a day as I'm able. I ride a desk anywhere from 8 - 12 hours depending on the season and this has helped enormously.

What's up everyone? 6 days post labrum surgery and missing lifting and even more missing using my right hand. Pain is not fun and the long road to recovery sounds no fun either. I did drop my calories...but kind have been cheating each day. I have been riding bike daily for about 45 minutes the past several days but not looking forward to the loss of the muscle I had/have before I can actually lift again.

Still ordering supplements and using but only ordering new proteins. I'll update later.
