Are message boards a form of social media? I contend that they were social media before social media even existed and remain to be a form of social media. The only difference is that it's community social media and not individual. All the other components remain the same. That said, a person can start a journal or other type of thread and maintain it as their individual page.
I ask mainly because of the people whom I read on occasion here that say they hate social media. I always think... then why are you on it???
What's your opinion?

Message boards, email lists, and blogs definitely fall within the overall definition of social media, however the line that really defines social media as we use the term is rapid media which is something that can be very quickly taken (away to reshare/meme/re-send), sourced, and shared in two way communication.

I say no because we(gen x) started with newsgroups in the 90's and they were very specific to( ex. gti-vr6 list) the topic on hand. I see social media as more a thing like Myspace where you put a photo, and all of your personal business out there "on the street" for all to consume. To me one is more individual while the other is a collective exchange of thoughts, ideas, and opinions.

Merriam-Webster dictionary:
Social Media; forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)
Sounds exactly like a message board to me!

Lots of details are missing, intentionally, that you would have found on Myspace and FB. This is a community open chat to me.
Example 1. No one knows if i am home or away for the 4th of July, so my house won't be robbed like Rob Gronkowski's was....or countless others who have been tracked/stalked via social media. There is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and...It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!

You could claim any website with a social function is "social media”, however, not necessarily in the vein of ******** & Co. While it is a discussion-based forum, it lacks the same networking and small-interaction structure of Soc Meds. I would say, however, that leaving ******** to stalk message boards isn't a victory. It's just a change of scenery.
