Thanks, but I've been looking for a GBA SP 101 model (back-lit model vs front-lit). They aren't really cheaper. Some of them actually cost much more.
I know that the GBA-SP 101 lcd can fit into a GBA and look great. But I don't want to destroy one of those. So I guess I need to fork over the money for a backlight.

That's a nice collection! I currently do not own a Gameboy Pocket but would love to add one to my collection.
Soldering station I use is X-Tronic Model #4010, so far it's great and haven't had any issues with heat and it came with tons of different tips, very small and easy to store.*** Extreme OCD crew *** (brb bench press not parallel to the ceiling beams)

I'm the opposite, the GBA SP is just way too cramp for my hands and prefer the non-SP lay out. AGB 101 models are stupid expensive, your best bet is to find a 'broken' one on eBay. I bought my 101 on ebay from a seller listing it as 'as is for parts' and described it as not turning on and every once in a while turning on and working. For $30 it was a gamble, in the end the only thing that was wrong with it was a loose power switch that took like 1 minute to fix.
Edit: For comparison:
GBA SP (AGB 101) with the brightness turned up all the way. With the GBA backlit mod, the only way to turn up the brightness is with turning the potentiometer on the back of the GBA's mainboard. I suppose I could adjust it a tad bit to match the max brightness setting of the SP. Also I want to change the GBA SP shell to this:
It's about $16 on ebay for the shell and replacement glass screen.Last edited by mkx1775; 06-04-2018 at 02:33 PM.

I almost bought that soldering station. I ended up buying a cheap adjustable iron though.
Hit eBay up for GB Pocket. I just bought another GB pocket last night from eBay (Japan). Says it doesn't work, but the other two I bought "didn't either". Fun to buy these cheap and then refurbish them.
I also have another GBA from Japan coming any day now.

I've seen some episodes on that channel. I saw the episode where they had a NES with a native HDMI mod on it and how they analyzed true colors and pixel output and also I think I remember seeing one for the Sega Saturn regarding the best output types. I love channels like those and they're really the ones that inspire me to keep going with collecting retro games. I've been watching RetroGameTech on YouTube a lot lately, basically he buys junk/retro games off of eBay and fix/refurbishes them.

I also recommend the channel of Adam Koralik, it has a lot of videos about getting the best possible (native) resolution out of most retro consoles: https://www.youtube.com/adamkoralik
in Belgium SCART was the standard, so since the SNES era I could play through SCART
but with the newer models of HD-TVs the SCART ports seem to be dissapearing, just like VGA
I have an older Philips HD TV with HDMI, SCART, VGA and component ports
I used to have these hooked up simultaneously:
N64 - RGB-modded French model through SCART
GC - component cable (yes, I have the official Japanese Nintendo component cables, I got them while they were expensive but still affordable lol)
DC - VGA box -> insane quality for almost 20 yo+++ miscin' at work crew +++

I don't think it's worth messing with the GBA's contrast level on the mainboard. I have read that you can really mess things up and possibly fry your board if messing with it too much.
And I like that shell for the GBA SP. I am always torn on keeping things original vs new shell. The GB Pocket that I received from Japan was absolutely filthy. Like it had been in the bottom of a sandbox for a year. I was going to buy a new shell, but it cleaned up nicely. So I decided to keep it 'original'.

I had this mindset up until this year. I have a few RetroPie setups that I am proud of. Never thought that I would want to play on the original equipment again.
After learning about modding the RaspberryPi and seeing people put them into Gameboy cases, I became interested. Bought some books on electronic repair, soldering equipment, etc. Then out of the blue, I stumbled upon the RetroGameTech channel (mentioned above) on YouTube and saw how easy it is to refurbish old equipment. From there I have been hooked.

Went to my storage unit after work to pull this gem out.
I remember carrying this around and feeling like I had the biggest dick on the playground as a kid. I remember kids would watch over my shoulder and while I played some Sonic and Streets of Rage.
Like I said previously, this is one of my pride possession out of my collection. This was my very first handheld. It was one of the first handheld to have backlit, spent tons of time playing this under the covers during school nights when I should have been sleeping. Road trips, plane ride, etc.. this went with me everywhere. I remember watching the 3 Ninjas Kick Back movie and was so hyped about the Game Gear. In the movie the kid had a Game Gear that he used to predict the future. I had one before that movie came out.
I attribute the conditions of my game boxes to having mild OCD as a kid (still have it to this day, see sig).
Opening this gives me so much nostalgia, brings me back to when I got this for Christmas in '92 and I remember distinctly playing this while Home Alone was airing for the first time or so on cable TV.
I tried turning it on but it wouldn't get pass this screen without turning off, sign of bad capacitors in the unit. This is a common issues for these things, thankfully they sell the replacement capacitor kits on ebay for cheap. I also have a spare that I bought a while back and thinking about changing out the caps on that one as well and replacing the screen with a modern LCD like this one:

I have a seperate game room in a spare bedroom...need better pics but I've got 3 crts in there (Trinitrons) with atari 2600 - PS2 all hooked up and ready to play + my gaming PC.
This is the section next to the pc and across from the big CRT. The PVM has the PS2 slim, Genesis, 1chip snes, wii, and N64 connected to it (all RGB except for the 64 which is s-video). The Trinitron on the right has the 2600 and NES. Also shown are random games that didn't fit on my other shelves and my gameboys.

Hnnngghh!! Fuaaaaarkkkk!!!!!
Damn this is a legit retro set up! I am super jealous! I don't have any CRT's and I'm looking for some old school Sony Bravia or Trinitrons around the area. Mirin' them CRT set ups real hard. Also I need to look for a shelf unit just like what you have. That is perfect for retro gaming setups.*** Extreme OCD crew *** (brb bench press not parallel to the ceiling beams)
