95# for 8 reps = 108 1RM
ok, it's the first time I ever did BB squats in my life.
But for the record... that is my starting point.
no vid, so I hope that you all will just take my word on the stat.

congrats on getting Barbell Back squats done JediRN
I remember how pleased I was 1st time I convinced myself I could squat
It took me a few visits to get up to 95lb though - went through the empty bar and added 5lbs each session for weeks before being up to 95lb
you will have cause to celebrate on a weekly basis, for many weeks to come if you stick with it☻/

jelly much
I work out alone. If I'm going to have a spectacular failure trying a 1RM then somebody ought to at least be there to capture it on video.
Thanks. I'm consciously taking the time to appreciate the newbie gainz. I know that the real effort comes later when it takes months to just eek over a plateauA man who views the world the same at 50 as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life.

that was my PR in junior high
lol. never squatted in J.H. school.
hey, that's how much i started with when i got back into squats like 5 years ago. sore for a month. you'll be up to 135 within a month. try squatting 3 days a week and see if that helps out, if not twice a week can't be good for you, or once a week if that's what is scheduled for your workout routine. The Ageless Wonder Crew: Client, Player, President.

Update for posterity
did 5x5 at 145 lbs this AM
date 1rep max
9/29/14 108#
12/6/14 163#
So 50% increase in 2.5ish months. no injuries.
According to my calcluations, I will be squatting over 3000 pounds by the time I'm 50.

Nice progress. Just my opinion, but if it were me just starting squats, I would drop the weight even further and work on 8 to 10 rep sets to try and perfect form, and, to build foundation strength from ground zero. PRs should not be at all important right now, unless strength is your only goal. By starting with more weight than you can perfectly handle, you are giving up learning good form, and good form will increase development and strength over time.

I agree
I did barx8
95x5x1
135x5x4
then the 160
The 4th and 5th reps at 135 were much more difficult and when I looked at the video, very awkward and unbalanced.
Probably will back down to 115 next time and work on form and depth. I never realized how much flexibility was required.
As far as goals, I've been told that strength and muscle mass go hand and hand at the noobie stage that I currently enjoy being in. Basically, I just want to progress safely and continue lifting into my 70's or later.
basically the PR's are nothing but personal vanity. I'll never lift enough to really impress the long time lifters here so that's not my goal. I just want to impress myself.
anyway thanks again. great advise.A man who views the world the same at 50 as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life.
