Question The heigher the heel, the better for front squat?

    Hi!

I want to buy an Oly shoe for front squating only.
My question is, that a higher heel is always better then a lower one?

I'm planing to buy a More Mile Lift 4 shoe, and it's got a 1,37" heel (35mm), which is higher then the standard.

I'm currently squating in chucks, my flexeblity is OK, but would be good If I could front squat more upright, maybe itt would help do plus one more reps before my upper back gives up.
    Stats:
    OHP 0,75BW 5RM
    Front Squat 1,5BW 1RM
    Deadlift 2,1BW 1RM

Higher heel is not necessarily better. Really depends on your build. Example - I had an original pair of the Doo Win imports that Glenn Pendlay was bringing in for his lifters. Both his guys and I had the wooden heel ground down and eventually Doo Win made a less aggressive heel similar to Adidas (which I should have bought in the first place). I had the heel ground down twice trying to get them to work right for me.

I'd say that unless you have a really funky build - get Adidas/Nike or similar and nothing extreme. You are already executing the movement in Chucks - which says something decent about your flexibility (I can do the same) so I would not go extreme. 2 cents anyway but you really need to try things. I've pulled quads and specifically VMO a number of times and basically default to Chucks these days unless I'm doing OLs or front squat specifically.

Keep in mind that a 35 mm heel height is probably overall heel height. Meaning that it includes the sole along the entire length of the shoe. Normally, you would be talking heel drop, which is the difference between the heel height and the thickness of the sole at the front of the shoe. Heel drop is normally around 0.75"-1".

That's what I thought. When I start people on squats, and if they have a little problem, I usuallly put a 3/4" board under their heels at the start. Once they become steadier, and more comfortable, they get weaned off the board.
