    BCAA's before bed and overnight

    Hey all!

I'm coming back from a ten year hiatus due to an illness. However I am back! I'm lost in the supplement game at the moment and I am looking for a decent BCAA drink that does not contain a lot of sugar, or stimulants and if possible strong FD&C artificial coloring. I like to drink on it before bed and during the night (high altitude and low humidity has me waking up thirsty!). I've been searching the different brands for a few weeks and cannot seem to make a decision on what kind may fit my needs. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Why not just drink water if you’re thirsty? Don’t see why you’d waste money on BCAAs for that purpose.

Agree with this. Unless you'd drink unflavoured (not tasty) then this would bad for your teeth (even if no sugars, there are other addons).

Water, got it. Sometimes I want something else and would like to ensure I have something in my system during the night. I do eat a light meal of cottage cheese and usually a plain cut of chicken or turkey before bed. So are we saying that BCAAs are now usless at this point if used overnight into the early morning hours upon waking up?

    Benefits of Branched-Chain Amino Acids

The branched-chain amino acids, or BCAAs, are metabolized in your muscles, where they provide an important source of energy. They also promote protein synthesis in muscles and reduce exercise-induced muscle damage, according to an article in the September 2008 issue of the “Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness.” In a controlled study where men participated in an eight-week resistance training program, the group that took BCAA supplements - gained more lean mass and lost more weight than men who did not take BCAAs, according to a report in the July 2009 issue of the “Journal of International Society of Sports Nutrition.”

And I'll raise you an article from 2017 that actually shows the references to multiple pieces of science rather than an article about foods high in leucine and isoleucine which is counter to taking supplemental BCAAs.

But don't listen to actual scientists, listen to the guy that doesn't care about science and only the feelz.

"Thus, as we speculated, consumption of crystalline BCAA resulted in competitive antagonism for uptake from the gut and into the muscle and was actually not as effective as leucine alone in stimulating MPS. Despite the popularity of BCAA supplements we find shockingly little evidence for their efficacy in promoting MPS or lean mass gains and would advise the use of intact proteins as opposed to a purified combination of BCAA that appear to antagonize each other in terms of transport both into circulation and likely in to the muscle.”

Potentially yes. MPS stim without necessary substrate can lead to a refractory state as well as excess of select aminos hampering absorption of others

At best they arent helpful in those with adequate protein intakes outside of being a calorie source. For those with inadequate protein intakes, whey or EAAs are the right choice.

I have all of the studies catalogued, but I dont feel the need to post them as this topic has been beaten to death.

"Finally, it’s really interesting that the addition of the 2 other branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) appeared to prevent the positive effect of leucine on MPS. Isoleucine and valine use the same transporter for uptake in the gut as leucine. Therefore, it is speculated that isoleucine and valine compete for uptake with leucine, resulting in a less rapid leucine peak which is thought to be an important determinant of MPS rates."

I will be as bold as to predict that even BPI will switch to EAAs in the coming years as the evidence becomes more widely known and it becomes the more profitable venture

We are in that lag period where public knowledge has not caught up with scientific research

I dont think so. I think he's a smart guy. Sometimes people just need to see the results replicated for a period of time before changing preconceived ideals.

We are at that point where the evidence is becoming overwhelming against free form BCAAs. There is a near universal consensus among reputable researchers at this point that BCAA benefits are based on poorly controlled studies.

Check out Kaged Muscle's BCAA's. It's fermented with no flavor, but I feel it's a waste of money. If you are going to supplement stick with a protein powder. Eat some cottage cheese before bed, that provides your full spectra of BCAA's.
