How much more weight should I drop to look slimmer?

I am currently around 180 lbs 5'6, 23 years old and I used to be 218. My goal was to get to 160 but I am not sure of it'll he enough. Would you guys be able to help? I talked to a PT and he said that should be pretty good but not sure.

You will look much slimmer at 160 than you do at 180, especially if you drop the weight a reasonable pace while lifting weights. Get there, and then re-evaluate your goals. Congrats on your loss so far.

Of course being 20 lbs lighter would help you look slimmer, but it also depends on how you're doing it. A lot of people just restrict their calorie intake and/or do cardio and then they just end up looking like a smaller version of their current (fat) self. If your goal is to look firmer with muscle tone then you will need to lift weights and ensure you take in enough protein intake to help maintain what muscle you do have.
All it takes is consistency, effort, proper nutrition, good programming, and TIME.

Don't be upset with the results you didn't get from the work you did not do.

post a pic (you can), you probably need to get to 145/150 based on your height and being a novice

My current regime is weight training 3 days a week and cardio 3 days a week.

    Sun - cardio
    Mon - weight
    Tuse - cardio
    Wed - weight
    Thurs - cardio
    Fri - rest
    Sat - weights

And every one of those days I take my dog out for a run for about an hr or more. About 1.5 hrs to 2 hrs at the gym. Any help advice would be great.

You need to ensure you are on a balanced, proven, weightlifting program and doing the right exercises, and not just wasting your time by doing bicep curls and sitting on the hip abductor machines.

Please go to the workout program forum and check out the "Fierce 5 Novice Routine" sticky.

For weight training the PT told me to do this:

    Bench press
    Rows
    Latz pull down
    Overhead press
    Squats
    Deadlifts
    Sit ups

You dont need an outside site, the way to post it in in the post itself when you post a post, it is indeed there for every user.

Get on a novice strength program like mentioned, you need to do some reading and not random stuff in the gym that will spin your wheels. No need to do sit ups (or push ups) as they are largely worthless.

That's a good all-around selection of movements but you haven't mentioned sets, reps, weights, progression. Those are important to consider.

So he was telling me to try and lift heavy and add on 5 pounds each week if possible and trying to either do 3 x6 or 3x 8 sets.

Congrats on the progress. I think 180 is a good weight, but it is up to you. You would look slimmer at 160, obviously but it's not a big deal and personally I would just worry about maintaining

For his height, 180 is overweight unless he has lots of muscles and about 20% or less body fats.

Well, everyone is different based on the shape and size of their skeleton and muscle attachments...but I'm pretty much the same height as you and in my bodyspace you can see pics of me at 143 (my before pic), 163 (red background pics/avatar), 150 cut (yellow background), and 170 ("bulked"). Maybe this will help you get an idea of how you would look at any of those given weights.

As a useful tool, I'm about the same LBM (136-139) on all those pics except the "Before" picture...in other words, about the same muscle mass, just different body fat percentages.
