A cannon is about 4 feet off the ground. You drop a cannon ball from four feet I can guarantee you it's hitting the ground sooner than a cannon ball being accelerated across the ground horizontally. Is this seriously even debatable?

2:1 Mathematics degree here, and you're wrong. Speed matters when cannonball is fired horizontally, because F=ma.
When cannonball is dropped, equation becomes F=mg because gravity.
When fired from horizontal, acceleration must be taken into account because that will have an effect on how long the projectile will travel before it hits the ground.

The cannon is firing the cannon ball in the x direction only. Gravity is moving both the cannon balls in the y direction. Gravity doesn't care what the x velocity is, it only effects the y direction so both balls hit at the same time.
