The gym is going to be epic once it's done.
If you ever have a little free time, I'd love to read a review on the Cybex pieces. I don't remember seeing anyone do a review on them in the past, but maybe I should Google search and check.

I love the equipment.
How much would it have cost you to have a drywall crew come in and do that work? I bet they could've knocked it out in a day.[]---[] Equipment Crew Member No 7

Thanks! I did post in another thread, but it got buried real quick. Here's what I posted:
I really like the Cybex plate loaded pieces. I have 5 plate loaded cybex pieces that I'm keeping (7 in total at the moment). For at least the converging pieces, the advantages over Hammer are adjustability of start position (for the chest press and incline press), footprint, price and ease of pickup/transport. I have converging chest, converging overhead, advanced incline, kneeling leg curl and leg extension. I have put a ramp on my truck and dollied them right off. Super easy. For the plate loaded leg curl, I picked it up off my truck and put it on the ground as it's only 180lbs or so. The hammer pieces are 350lbs+ usually.
I'm pretty happy with cybex pushing pieces and hammer pulling pieces. I used to have the Hammer Bench Press and the Hammer Front Military Press, but I wasn't a huge fan of either. I like chest pieces to get a deep stretch and the Hammer bench just bottomed out all the time. There's no adjustability. Very frustrating...they were not cheap pieces either. The cybex converging overhead only has seat adjustments (which is really all that is necessary since the pushing plane is the same as the seat adjustment plane), but the chest press and incline press have 5 settings for how deep of a stretch you get.
I have the advanced incline, but I'd like to replace it with a converging incline once I find one. The advanced pieces are dual axis...so you can control how much convergence/divergence there is. That sounds good in theory like dumbbells...but it really limits how much weight you can use. There's also a few quirks with my advanced incline too...like if you bump into an arm by accident, the arms can actually converge so much that you can't enter the machine.
In addition to the advanced and converging, there's also ones called just "plate loaded." Like David Feather has a Cybex Plate Loaded Shoulder Press with dual handles. I'd love to try that one out - dual handles like the Nebula version, fixed path, looks really cool.
I'm not sure about from the start. I was worried that no one would want to do it unless I moved all the equipment out...but in hindsight, if I scheduled the crew for a nice 2-day stretch with no rain, I could've just put most of the equipment in the driveway.
I actually am texting with someone right now to finish the work. I'm not confident in my ability to drywall around the steps...and I don't feel like taping/mudding/sanding the 30 boards on the ceiling. I could handle the walls...but ugh...thinking about doing the ceiling gives me pain.
I'm also starting a new job on the 21st, so I'm pretty busy lately trying to wrap-up/transition in my current department. Getting someone else to finish the work would be awesome.Garage Gym Owner

If you get the right crew, the drywall could all be done in a day. With the the new types of drywall compound, especially lightweight and quick drying, many coats can be done in one day. Worse case scenario is having them finish of the ceiling in one day, so you can move the equipment back in, then they just have to go around and do the walls the next day. Two skilled guys should be able to do that in one day, seriously.

Thanks. I just got a quote of $1300 to just finish what I've already done. I think that's too much - I was thinking $800-$900. I have another guy coming out today for a quote.
I did a few hours of filling gaps two nights ago. I pretty much just need tape, mud, sand...all the big gaps are filled. The section near the stairs needs work. I probably need to hang about 3-5 more boards there and figure out how to drywall around stairs (i see youtube in my future).
Here's where I am now:

I got the lights off Amazon. They say 5/6": https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MTKYS0O
They are daylight 15W LED / 120W equivalent with 1,100 lumens. x18 lights, I'm looking at about 270 watts total and a shade under 20,000 lumens. I went on garage journal message board and they were saying I needed WAY more lumens. But after installing them, it's plenty bright. With a white ceiling and mirrors, it should get brighter.
I bought the Leviton Decora Wi-Fi dimmer switch to control them with 600w capacity. I went with the wi-fi so I could remotely turn them off and on from my phone. I haven't installed the switch yet, so they are just running off a normal on/off switch. It's Alexa compatible, so I might put an Alexa in the garage to control lights and music.Last edited by Bench905; 05-09-2018 at 07:26 PM.

Major progress. The crew came in the first day and hung maybe 6-7 boards by the stairs. They also did the drywall returns in the windows and all window corner beads.
Next day was mudding and taping.
They're coming back early this week to do the next coat. Should be ready for paint later in the week.
After painting, I still have some smaller work to do like making and installing window sills, installing ceiling fan, installing new switches, etc.
And then cleaning up before moving everything back in...Garage Gym Owner

It's starting to look great ! I'm sure that you've been getting enough workouts in ... just moving equipment around, lol. Reps owed, on spread.

Looks great. It's amazing how much brighter a gym gets with some paint. Just a suggestion, Not sure if you were planning on protecting the bottom couple of feet on the wall or not. When I had to oversee two student fitness centers as part of my job as strength coach, we put 2 foot sections of plywood painted on the walls. To prevent plates and dumbbells from marking them.

Thanks. Yeah, it was bad. The guy told me I didn't need to move that much while they did the stairs...and then he was like "you need to have all this moved out by noon." The worst was moving the plates and dumbbells.
Thanks! My wife says my priorities are a mess!
Yeah, I wish I could figure that one out. It's on a concrete slab and then it's framed. So I can't use regular baseboard because the framing sticks out from the drywall. I really don't know what people do in this situation. I guess the best answer would be to put in a subfloor and raise it to the height of the framing? I really don't know. I'm learning a ton of stuff on the fly.
I'd eventually like some 6" black vinyl baseboard like you see in a lot of gyms, but don't know how I'd do that.

Drywall guys are coming today to do the final coat.
For the baseboard, I think I'm going to try 1x4 or 1x6 on top of the 2x8 bottom plate and then quarter round in front of that. I'll have to see how that looks. In reading some posts on garage journal, a lot of people like a darker color towards the bottom of a garage wall (so it won't show dirt as much) and lighter colors towards the top (to reflect light more). I'll probably go pretty conservative and use gray variants - although I'm not ruling out a red and/or black horizontal accent stripe.
I ordered a router and 16ga finish nailer to complete the window sills and baseboard. Trying to pick up a used table saw too. This project has seen a plethora of tools bought and most will be eventually sold - including the drywall lift and the drywall tools (cutout tool and screwgun).Garage Gym Owner

For my basement (after rebuilding due to flooding) I used baseboard that is molded to look and feel like wood but is more a plastic/PVC (without looking cheap). It's easy to put up and you don't have to worry about it getting moldy or musty if it gets wet. May want to consider that or an industrial style baseboard if there is ever a chance you may get some water in your gym.

Thanks. I have looked at those. If I had a traditional setup where one piece of baseboard trim would be used, I'd probably opt for the flexible vinyl cove base like you see in commercial buildings.
But it's weird because my base is basically stepped....there's the concrete stem wall that's maybe 1-2" high, then the 2x8 bottom plate. And then the drywall is on top of the 2x8.
My plan right now is to try and paint the exposed concrete to match the lower part of the wall. And then use 1x4 or 1x6 on top of the bottom plate and then quarter round next to that (I technically should have 1" of exposed bottom plate. I'm honestly not sure how it will look. But considering it's stepped twice, I can't really do a traditional baseboard. I could try boxing in the baseboard, but that seems like a lot of woodwork.
I don't think water will be an issue. There's 1-2"" of concrete wall before it gets to the bottom plate. I will occasionally get a tiny bit of water towards the front of my garage during big storms (it gets under the garage doors). But nothing that would come remotely close to getting up the concrete.Garage Gym Owner

I know that you probably aren't epoxying the floor, since it has mats. But when I did a garage, that that had the same steps up the wall as yours, I ran my epoxy paint (two part rustoleun) about 3 inches up the wall and it looked good. Some masking tape and an epoxy paint may be the easiest finish. Just cap the gaps first.

Things are moving again. Drywall guys came Friday to sand, picked up paint with my daughter on Saturday, and then got to work on Sunday.
There's dried mud and tons of drywall dust on the floor...and this was double swept. I tried sponging the floor. Waste of time. Brought out the pressure washer to blast off the mud, then foam cannon with solution, then rinse. My wife was nice enough to help with the pressure washing.
Did two coats on the ceiling. Took 4.5 gallons..ugh. I'm sure I missed some spots on the second coat as the sun was at a bad angle to see the ceiling.
I anticipate having to roll a little more this week.
Lighting back in and almost finished. I took this pic and then moved the rest of the mats back into the gym.
I am spent. I think I started painting/pressure washing at 11am or so and didn't really stop until 9pm. I have 28 mats (4 rows of 7), so I had to move those 2,800 lbs at least twice.
With the ceiling (mostly done) and mats relatively clean, I can start bringing some equipment back in and just give myself some room to paint the walls.

Who cares about that s---. Let's see some paint on dem walls!
You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

It's coming along great, where are you hiding all of the equipment. I expected to see it outside the garage.

I had the same thought. I started moving equipment around this weekend, in order to lay my rolled rubber flooring, I had to disassemble some pieces to fit through my gym door, this commercial equipment is awkward, and heavy.
The gym project is really progressing, you're going to use a lot of paint on those fresh walls, but it's going to be worth it.

Great job bench, you are almost there. All of your hard work is going to be worth it. You should get a pressure washing guy like the one I used to clean some mats I pulled out of a closed Crossfit. These mats were pretty nasty.
