    Question Can you only gain fat and not muscle?

    This may be a stupid question, but is it possible to gain just fat, not muscle, in a calorie surplus even though if you're following a strength program?

    Are following a strength training program? Yes? Then you're not going to only gain fat that's ridiculous. Are you a lazy slob that sits on the couch all day eating 5 times your TDEE? Then ya, 100% fat increase.

    I get the impression that you are worrying unduly about fat gain (from reading the thread that I closed). We see this a lot, if you develop psychological issues with food then this is not going to help your results or life in general. You need to trust the process and not nit pick over details or worry about silly hypothetical scenarios if you are going to succeed.

    Yes it is possible. It will only happen in a small minority of people though.

    If you feel that you're gaining too much fat simply reduce your caloric intake and see if you're still able to progress. Contrary to popular opinion eating a surplus isn't a necessity to gain muscle.

    I forgot the study, but simply overfeeding caused non-exercisers to gain like 25-35% lean mass out of the weight gained
    " As expected, weight gain was observed where on average 8.1kg of total mass was gained, of which 5.4kg was fat mass and 2.7kg being muscle mass. This provides a nice round figure of a 2:1 ratio in favour of fat gain during periods of overfeeding in lean individuals without any form of resistance exercise. "

    Gaining LBM =/= gaining muscle. LBM includes glycogen, water, organ tissues etc. The study didn't measure muscle.

    Some of the participants gained far more fat than others, which supports the large individual variability in response to overfeeding.
