Haven't updated for ages, I'm up to 30s on frolov 5mm (15min cycles)
Apparently i was wrong and 3mm is not recommended at all with 4mm being considered advanced only.
Gonna try 4mm again without water and see if there's any improvement, otherwise will just keep improving the 5mm for few more month.
Also got to the point I can mouthtape during sleeping, pretty cool.
For the last 5 months I've done a lot of experimentation, a price to pay since buteyko has poor objective case studies.
Breathing through 4mm tubes is bad
Tested the 4mm inside out for couple months, even used no water & small bottle, I conclude it simply doesn't work with human respiratory system.
The air creates too much pressure, leading to massive contraction (not the good ones either), they never ever progress and ease out.
Even the "straw breathing" technique which is used by some free divers and SEAL teams, is referring to a 6mm straw. (like a regular plastic straw)
Every time I used a 4mm tube, it actually led to "CO2 "intolerance", (just like trying to advance too fast), essentially it reverses progress.
High frequency training - meh and niche
Another thing I was testing, was regime following various buteyko communities, essentially they to 2-4x sessions a day. (instead of my 3x a week)
It does work better for about a month, after which the exercises are so demanding on the body, half a day rest is just not enough.
Which again reverses progress. (imagine repetitively trying to lift during recovery)
Better ways to increase intensity
Increase water (up to 30ml), larger bottle.
Cleaning breathing device
A byproduct of high frequency training, is the device can never be properly dried, this leads to higher contaminants like mould & viruses.
Learned more good stuff, I now (1) Replace the tube once a year (2) wash the device with warm mild detergent at the end of each week (3) Wash after every session as usual.
What's next
About a month ago I've resumed my old breathing regime, I'm up to 6mm mid bottle, 28ml water with 20sec cycles.
Lifting wise, this experimentation sure took a its toll, but with my breathing coming back up, energy and gains are going up too.
My next goal is to get up to 23s 6mm again, and also get my lifts back up. (possible bulk cycle)
