    BCAA's and Cavities

I havent posted yet since most of what I read about has been discussed in already existing threads, this may be too but I can't NOT share since it just came up and if it helps even one person then it will have been worth it!

I just got back from a checkup/cleaning at the dentist and she noticed a few brand new baby cavities around the front of my teeth (like last few months new), that were typical of someone who is drinking a lot of juice or pop. I'm somewhat obsessive about my teeth - I floss daily, use an electric toothbrush 2-4 times day and supplement with calcium and vitamin D3.

When she asked me if I started drinking more juice than normal, my response was that I have not drank so much as a sip of juice/pop/milk/alcohol for two months and have been tracking every gram of sugar intake (which has been low!) I told her I've been following a competition prep diet and then she's like, "really? I have another patient who suddenly appeared with the same new cavity pattern and when I asked him if he had changed anything in his diet, he said he was bodybuilding."

She got me to write down everything that I was supplementing with and told me in the meantime to start drinking my supps out of a straw. I've got my appt with her mid march to follow up and take care of the new cavities.

Obviously the first thing I did when i got home was my own research and it looks like the BCAAs are likely the culprit and possibly the coffee, though my coffee intake has not changed over the last few years. Looks like BCAAs are really acidic and this is bad news for teeth!

    pH of water = 7
pH of coffee = 5 (acidic)
pH of BCAAs = 2 (very acidic!)

Now this might have hit me harder than others for whatever reason, maybe because I'm a little crazy about my teeth in the first place. However, I feel like just in case anyone else has noticed an increase in cavities corresponding to an increase in BCAA use and maybe didn't put two and two together (I may not have if my dentist didn't mention the other bodybuilder guy), then here is a perspective that might help you do some damage control!

I'm not going to stop drinking them, I'm just going to be a weirdo with a straw in my water bottle.

Oh man, didn’t know thank you. I’m going to stop drinking them immediately and get my Bcaas through my food intake instead.

Yep obviously that's exactly what I meant posting this. Everyone stop taking BCAAs right away! I'm glad I've converted two people to my anti-bcaa agenda. Whew. Hopefully more will see the light.

    Similar experience

Thank you for sharing your experience. I was shocked last month when I went for a routine dental visit and was told I have 8 cavities! I’ve only had 1 as a child and nothing until now (at 40). I eat a very clean diet, avoid sugar and starchy foods, no alcohol or any type of soda. I brush with an electric toothbrush 3 times daily, floss 1x and use mouthwash. I drink coffee and tea but drink with water. I was using 2 servings of BCAAs / day and they did contain acids. I still drink 1 serving per day but split up the serving and drink at separate times in the day to dilute with water. I’m not sure it had any impact or if I’ll purchase more BCAAs once I use up my supply. Please consider that tooth decay is a possibility before you ruin your teeth.

It is not a direct indicator of corrosion, but it is a decent relative indicator of potential. Obviously the corrosive agent and substance should be assessed on a case by case basis. And clinical experience can factor in for a diagnostician. Many of these products contain citric acid or other potential agents of hydroxyapatite breakdown as well.

To your comment, alkaline agents are particular interesting due to the formation of a passivation layer in moderately alkaline solutions.

Sadly your post here in no way has furthered the knowledge in this thread. At most it seems to scream “look at me”, and nothing more.

Arginine, a common amino acid, could help significantly improve oral health as it breaks down dental plaque, according to a collaborative study by experts at Newcastle University and University of Michigan, USA.
L-arginine is cheap and easy to add to toothpaste or mouthwash.

Most BCAAs have citric acid in the mix. Citric acid will definitely attack tooth enamel.

Tip: Drink your BCAA's with a straw so less of it gets on your teeth. Then immediately rinse your mouth with water.

Don't do this. The real answer is just don't buy BCAAs. They don't benefit you in any way.

Whatever you think, if folks want to continue using BCAAs and are concerned about their teeth, then all I was saying is that they are better off using it in tablet or capsule form.

Whether you think it is necessary or not is besides the point. Folks will still continue purchasing BCAAs and still keep using them...

Whatever you think, if folks want to continue using BCAAs and are concerned about their teeth, then all I was saying is that they are better off using it in tablet or capsule form.

Whether you think it is necessary or not is besides the point. Folks will still continue purchasing BCAAs and still keep using them...

That's why educating them is what they need. It is the right thing to do if you actually care about helping them.

Your stance is ultimately insulting to that person as you suggest they are not intelligent enough to learn.

No they are not better off. They are equally as worse off because they are still getting ZERO value for the money spent. The correct answer is to educate them to a point where they understand it's a waste of money regardless of any secondary issues.

The primary issue is still that BCAAs have no value in bolus.
