At least 16 people are dead after a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, law enforcement officials told CNN.
The suspect, a former student, was taken into custody "after he committed this horrific, homicidal, detestable act," Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said. Law enforcement sources told CNN that the suspect has been identified as Nicolas Cruz.
At least 14 people have been taken to area hospitals following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The shooting caused "numerous" fatalities, Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said. He did not know the exact number.

The suspect was known to be verbally violent and threatening and is alleged that he bragged about his guns through photos on his phone and had been expelled for disciplinary reasons among other disturbing things.

How old is this kid and who was buying him guns?
I have never understood and never will the mindset of someone who gets so pissed off they are willing to go to this extreme and don't care if they end up dead or in prison for life. I can see getting into a fistfight with someone who's being an ass but to ruin your entire life over whats usually petty bull$hit is just asinine."You know that little thing in your head that keeps you from saying things you shouldn't? Yeah, well, I don't have one of those."

I don't know about that. They were interviewing kids who thought he was the shooter before they even found out who the shooter was. From what he had posted on social media should've been enough to at least investigate.
Maybe it wouldn't have helped but it doesn't hurt to take that extra step just in case.
I don't how to fix it but innocent kids have just been slaughtered and it's tragic.National Level Competitor (Female BB)

I am hearing that if the shooter was in New York, with all the photos of guns and violent posts on social media and his history, that he would have had his home raided and guns absconded. New York has the most experience with terrorism and these types of incidents. Each State has different laws.

It's the 18th school shooting this year? The 8th resulting in death. And it's ... mid February. One fatal school shooting a week.

This is a random thought that I have had about these mass shootings for a long time. I wonder how many of these we would actually see if it wasn't for the instant fame these nutjobs attain when they commit these acts. Soon, the entire country will know who this guy is and his picture will be everywhere. We will know his entire biography and all sorts of details about his life and childhood. I imagine that can be quite appealing to some unstable nut who has nothing going for him in life. Instead of feeling like an anonymous angry loser, he can dominate the news cycle and become a household name.
I'm not sure if this is valid, but I wonder what would happen if the media stopped identifying these wackos....or maybe, didn't obsessively cover this every time it happened. Don't get me wrong, I am not blaming the media....I blame the shooter -- but I just can't help thinking that the instant fame is an attractive lure to somebody like this.It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

I saw that and heard the screaming and thought these are children like any other on any other day caught up with whatever 16-18 yr old kids do and think, in an instant everything changed! What a world we live in, my hopes and prayers that these kids will get through this and embrace life for all it is , and just how precious life actually is

X3.
I was watching this on the treadmill at the gym and the reporters were talking to parents of kids texting them from the scene. I started thinking about the parents who weren't getting texts and thinking about my own 14 and 17 year old. Good grief, what kind of horror to know everyone else is getting messages that your kid is OK and you're getting nothing.Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.

Yes, I thought about this before. The idea of getting "famous" might make this more appealing to some disturbed kids. But even simpler, I don't think most of them would even come up with the idea if it wasn't something that is shown on the news all the time.
But realistically, we can't expect that the news media will stop covering it. People read it when it gets published. We discuss it. It definitely is news, so to some degree the news media are just doing their job.
Not publishing the name of the shooter is an interesting idea. Based on a quick search, it is a topic that the media seem split on. I found this in an article titled "Withholding names and information" on a site named ethics.jornalists.org:
There is a growing sentiment that the names of mass killers should not be mentioned, or more realistically, that their names and photos should not be the focus of the news. This is because they often seek attention in their acts and feeding that could fuel copycats.
Most news organizations still identify mass killers, though, saying their identities and information about them are important parts of the story.

Much truth there Karl.
It's much easier to blame the tools used than to examine the break down in society that has occurred over the last several decades. I do blame the media though to a large degree and the endless coverage of the attackers, I also blame the violent video games, violent and angry music, along with the general disregard for morality in general. Was friends with Methuselah

Most news organizations identify mass killers because it is money. Free news. Each media outlet spins it to feed their audiences.
If they didn't identify the killers and if they didn't spend way too much time analyzing each aspect, then they risk losing their base.

I've seen these figures being thrown around today but I'm skeptical of the validity of the number.

The glorification of violence is not simply an issue for the news media. In western culture, we're perfectly fine with portraying violence in prime time television, physical and sexual violence is mainstream. Show two people making love? Watch the puritans froth at the mouth and lament the effect on children.

Looks like the number of shootings is actually four since January 1st, only two resulted in casualties, and at least one was an accidental shooting. Only two are "mass shootings", the other looked to be a personal conflict and the one was again accidental.
Though why a 12-year-old (the accidental shooter) felt the need for a gun at shcool is disturbing enough. Was friends with Methuselah
