How many pounds of muscle does a man have?

I've done some searches and can't find anything on this.

A person has fat mass and lean mass. Fat mass can be estimated with calipers etc. When you subtract fat mass from total body mass you get the lean mass. Lean mass includes everything that is not fat such as bones, skin, organs, retained water, food in digestive system and so forth. On average, what percent of lean mass is muscle, or how could you calculate this? Or in other words, how many pounds of muscle does an average person have? Obviously this varies widely, but does anyone have a way of estimating this?

    From the NSCA CPT book:

Skeletal muscle comprises anywhere from 36-45% of overall bodyweight.

If you have a increase in lean mass all that may mean is you just ate a big meal or you're retaing water. I'm just trying to see if there is a way to calculate how much muscle a person is gaining as apposed to water etc.

Also just curious what percent of lean mass is muscle.

You can't seperate your lean mass from water, without intracellular water you would be tiny.

I'm not talking about intracellular water. I'm just talking about retained water, and water you just drank. For example I could drink a gallon of water after measuring bodyfat with calipers and the 8lbs in the gallon of water would register as an 8lb. gain in lean mass, but is wouldn't be muscle mass.

OP, you can't find info on this because this knowledge has no meaning. In realm of bodybuilding all you need to know is a trend, not an absolute numbers. Gain or loss of muscle is derived from circumference measurements, your lifts weight/rep changes, skin folds combined with weight change etc. You can't add another plate by taking a big dump, this kind of thing.

Weight yourself in the morning after eliminating waste.

I weight daily, take the lowest of the last 7 days, and then keep a 7 day running average. This will give a more accurate measure of change.
