    Fixed or Varying Program?

    My trainer is insisting that I have different exercises (8 on average) per muscle group everyday with very low weight. I find his method questionable, because I'm used to having a fixed 4-5 exercise program per muscle group that usually lasts a month before I change things up by the next month. He insists we do it his way because it's going to spark real muscle gain, rather than a temporary pump if I have it my way.

    So should I listen to him or should I do my own thing?

    Sounds dumb. The most important principle for a novice lifter is "Directed Adaptation". This means doing the same thing repeatedly to get better at it. This is why if you look at the novice routines we recommend in the sticky threads, they usually repeat the same handful of exercises every session or at least a couple of times a week.

    I would dismiss any trainer who thinks very low weight= real muscle gain.
