    Sissy Squat

So I've been really considering a sissy squat machine but it seems to be one of the least in-demand pieces of equipment - the wholesaler that I contacted said that there was no demand so they didn't even carry them.

Since I've had a difficult time finding recommendations and reviews, I was wondering if the guys and girls in this forum have had any experience or recommendations. And don't recommend a Mech6 sissy unless you're able to get him to make me one

I recommend you stop being a sissy and do real squats.

I don't have one, but I've used them. Hurt my knees. You tried one?

Haven't tried one but I'm pretty limited on space in my home gym. Was searching for an accessory workout for my quads and thought a sissy machine would be a great addition. A vertical leg press would make my space feel feel very small so I'm looking for alternatives.

Were you using weight when it hurt your knees? I was thinking about using it after I've pre-exausted my quads with front squats

There is a DIY version out there called a quad blaster - I rigged one up, works just as well.

I have an Atlantis Sissy Squat Bench and think its great for frying the quads at the end of a session, or as either a pre or post exhaustion movement. Always high rep and never with weight. If I remember correctly, Pro-Maxima had the least expensive commercial SSB if youre gonna buy new.

And I would be very careful with that quad blaster, it can have a similar effect on the knee as a Calf Slicer submission.

Sissy squats could be proclaimed the #1 quad building exercise, blessed by a thousand PhD's around the world, but having dealt with previous patellar ligament knees injuries I wouldn't touch it with a 10' pole. Which is saying alot, because I actually own a leg extension which is not universally praised by orthopedic surgeons (although was used in my rehab). To be fair though I have never used one of these or attempted the standing version, I'm relying solely on broscience based on what I see the movement doing to the knee ligaments.

Is that the general consensus among lifters? Chatsalt had mentioned knee pain and you're saying huge quad gains with the potential for fairly serious knee ligament damage. I wouldn't want to sabotage my ability to lift for short term gain and long term pain.

a7stringkilla - being the owner of a sissy squat machine, have you noticed any knee pain?

I will seriously consider any feedback before making my own or going ahead with this purchase.

Thank you litljay. I'll look into the thread

    edit: spelling

I have not, but I make sure the pad is no higher than 3/4 of the way up my calf, and I rarely use any additional weight. Sometimes Ill hold a 25 for a few reps then let it go for a single drop set, but nothing crazy like you see people doing online. Ill typically do about 30 - 40 reps with it, and its mainly at the end of a workout. Also, I naturally dont have the strongest frame, so I play it pretty safe with my movements.

I wouldnt recommend it to someone with knee issues though because I can see how it could aggravate it.

A7's approach seems more reasonable, I also like the idea of setting the pad lower on the calf because the thought of supporting right behind the knee makes me cringe. My situation is probably unique though, I played competitive soccer well into my late twenties and had a MINIMUM of six (6) major knee injuries (left and right) with a handful of them being partial tears to the ACL/MCL/Patellar Ligaments. At this point it's a miracle that I don't suffer from knee pain during squats, not looking to push my luck LOL.

He may have "quads of peace", but I'll bet his knees aren't 60 years old either!

I own a sissy squat in my home gym. I don’t find it hard on knees more than regular squats but it is for sure a quad destroyer! For me, nothing is worst than this to feel some fire in the quads. As A7 said, i don’t use additional weights on it, no need to but i don’t do as many reps as him, for me 10-15 is my top at the end of a hard leg workout. I love to do light leg extensions with 2-3sec isometrics at top supersetted with these... After four sets of this to follow some squats and leg presses, my quads are fried!

Heres a finisher Ill throw at people sometimes once I know theyre up for it. I starts with a sissy squat - 10 reps with 25 pound plate, then 20 reps with bodyweight, then the nightmare continues for another couple of minutes. The woman in this vid is pretty gnarly and very, very strong.

Were you using weight when it hurt your knees? I was thinking about using it after I've pre-exausted my quads with front squats
    No weight.

To me it feels like an unnatural ROM, Similar to how some people use machines and don't have a problem....some can't use them.
