It's one of the only memes, if you can even call it such a thing, that old and just a little bit out-of-touch people understand. When I was on Facebook, it was always kind of sad moms, aunts, and other older people who associate humor with the "coffee mug humor" which is usually attributed to photos of hyper squirrels, cartoon figures with large eyes, animals with exaggerated expressions with captions like "Don't talk to me until I've had my coffee". Or "It's wine o'clock somewhere."

Companies spend millions in research to make characters that will be spread as memes and be usable as toys. You can bet that the facebook macros with minion backgrounds came out from the company that made the movie. Parents are literally buying minion toys for kids because the adult likes the minions.
