Can we make a sticky for all the ridiculous "skinny fat" questions. I swear, I can't get away from that pointless term!

They'll drop off in about 2-3 weeks once the resolutioners go back to their old ways.

But... yeah... between the skinny-fatties and the old thread bumps... it's getting annoying.

Would be great if the older threads locked themselves after a certain period of time thereby stopping their bumps and the Mods having to manually lock them

Agreed, same with Reddit and other resources.
People aren't just too lazy, they are also unique, as they think, and all those threads won't help, because they know - their problem is special one.
Very rare occurrence, when someone realize that he skipped sticky threads and apologize for that. But this situation is 1/500.

If I thought it would help even a little, I'd do it, but it won't. Since it's the most current buzzword on the interwebz, every skinny forum noob seems to feel obligated to describe himself in that way. It's far worse in other forums than in this one though; the 'introductions' forum is overloaded with such posters (as well as the 'teen' forum, where I choose not to moderate), and just about every one of them shows up here thinking he needs to "cut," even though he displays toothpick arms and ostrich legs. It's depressing to realize how most of these people have been so misguided by mass media nonsense before they arrive here.

And I agree; it has long-since become tiresome, even moreso that the stupid, 'ectomorph' tag that still manages to surface at least a couple times a day in these forums. Probably the best thing to do, if you are so-inclined to help these poor souls, is to direct them to the sticky threads that they failed to view in the first place.

    ETA:

Good on all you regulars who spend your own valuable time to try to get these people squared-away and on the right path.

Aww shucks! And I thought being 130 lbs, still being able to see my ribs, but I have some lower belly fat qualified for skinny- fat! How can I judge myself now? What body type am I?

Oh the ridiculousness of the skinny fat nation that has emerged and grew faster than Antifa!

Every teenager in America is skinny fat.

I think it’s more a millennial thing.... Half these people claiming to be skinny fat just want a conformational excuse to lose weight without feeling they’re developing some sort of eating disorder bc they can clearly see in the mirror that majority of their body is skinny and they weigh nothing compared to what they wish they’d weigh.

How about stop playing video games, get in to some type of sport, quit eating junk and stuffing your face with sugary foods, and lift? That sounds like an idea! Stop being lazy period lol.

Sorry but not sorry, half these individuals get this poor self image perspective bc of the cap floating around social media. How about get off ********, Instagram, Snapchat and all this ridiculousness and spend your time actually getting active.

New word to replace skinny fat. Lazy, weak, and maybe a little pudgy.

The social competition of how men and women compare themselves to the looks and likes of others is sad.

You don’t need to look like someone else to be significant or to feel good about who you are. Just be YOU and genuinely YOU and you will be accepted more by others.

If you know you’re fat or overweight and want to get healthy then stop freaking eating, get on a gym program, get dedicated towards your health not your aesthetics, and get your ass to work!

If you’re skinny then learn some proper nutrition and get your ass lifting. Stop being lazy!

Aesthetics takes hard work and dedication 365 days a ear and much more! No supplement or 3 month program will ever give you such results.

Embrace who you are and just go for it! Fck what everyone else thinks or feels is socially correct in how one should look to be attractive or accepted. Kick rocks with that garbage.

    Ok rant over..

IMO it's a completely relevant term. Many beginners are skinny (lacking mass) and around 18-20% body fat. They rarely know what to do.

If they are here, and admitting they are skinny fat, then they know they have a problem and are looking to change.
They are small (lack muscle), and still have a substantial layer of fat. With clothes on, they look slim. How else would you describe it?
Some people are literally just skinny... skin and bones.
Personally, I think the term Skinny Fat is a perfect way to describe this particular body make-up.
Someone who is lacking muscle and is sitting somewhere around 20% bf give or take.

This guy is just plain skinny. Might be a little active and maybe eats ok. He's young and probably has good genetics too.
You might say he should start a lifting program to gain some muscle.

    This guy is "skinny fat".
You might just say he's pudgy or whatever but he's lacking muscle AND has that extra layer of fat.

This guy is just fat. What a fat ba$tard!

    What about someone like this?
Maybe we should start calling them "strong fat"? I wouldn't say that to his face, though. lol

Although I had my rant, yes I do agree the term is relevant and does describe certain people.

But the underlying message within my rant speaks on the fact that the term is so widely used even for those who are clearly not skinny fat.

Most people don’t have any idea of their BF% are in relation to their weight and how they look.

I was skinny fat. In fact I am still partially skinny fat because I do have more work to do. But I know the exact reasons that got me to that point in life as I was always skinny like a rail.

There was a time I was 160lbs but looked 7 months pregnant. It was because I wasn’t lifting and I was so desperate to gain weight I was just eating like crazy. Well I gained the weight lol. Didn’t like how I felt or looked. Stopped drinking and stopped stuffing my face it started to shrink. Was at the gym for a few months but never truly dedicated myself to a program and being picky towards cleaner food options.

Yes I got my stomach down a bit but still would be considered skinny fat.

Last few months I’ve been tracking and working out consistently through BW training and I am seeing results. Since I still have BF to lose I’m on my first deficit.

So yes the term is relevant for many, but it seems to be an abused term.

Teens especially unless overweight or obviously obese shouldn’t worry so much about having a little fat. If they lift and clean up some eating habits they will transform rather nicely. Esp since their hormones are optimal at their age.

A person at 160lbs with 15% bf and a small pudge might say they’re skinny fat, but clearly they’re not. Anyone 20% or higher for BF around the waist and stomach yet skinny elsewhere is clearly skinny fat.

I’d rather see posts asking should I bulk or cut and want to gain muscle then skinny fat this and skinny fat that. A lot of recent posts I see it doesn’t really apply. They just lack muscle mass and carry a weak midsection.

Anyways, you make good points, but I think in terms of skinny fat there’s a thin line between relevance and irrelevance to the description.

    typically...

skinny fat = average or low BMI and >18% bodyfat or so

skinny = average or low BMI and <12-13% bodyfat or so

So if you're 5' 10", 150lb and 18% bodyfat, you're probably a bit skinny fat or close to it

    If you're 5' 10", 138lb and 11% bodyfat, you're just skinny

So basically the same person could be 'skinny' simply by losing 12lb of fat if they started as 'skinny fat'. In the above example, both situation have the same lean mass (123lb), but they'd look very different.
