Does anyone have experience with this powder? I am surprised how poor tasting it is. Normally, I wouldn't ask if people have had similar experiences, but I like Animal and their products and would like to try another flavor, but the Salted Caramel is barely tolerable. Is it just the flavor?

I've tried most of the Animal Whey flavors. I think some are very good (banana, chocolate coconut, and red velvet), some are pretty decent but I don't know if I'd buy them again (I'd put salted caramel in this category), and others I didn't like at all. I wouldn't give up on all the flavors because you didn't care for the one you tried.

I've had 7 of their flavors. I thought that all of them were excellent. Overall the best tasting protein I've had, and I tried quite a few by now.
Salted Caramel is not among the flavors I tried so far, so I can't comment on that. It's among the lowest rated flavors on BB.com (together with Frosted Cinnamon Bun), so you may not be the only one who didn't like it much. Most of the others have much higher ratings.
If you like chocolate flavors, Chocolate Mint and Chocolate Coconut are both outstanding. Vanilla tastes about as good as vanilla gets. Banana Cream is exactly as @Farley says, it tastes like... banana, spot on. Red Velvet is very tasty. I don't remember the Mocha Cappuccino very well, but I think it was also very solid.
The one I cared about least was Brownie Batter. The taste was good, but it has little chunks in it that mainly just end up sticking to your blender bottle, which is kind of annoying.

Salted Caramel is a very strong flavor so people will either love it or not. By and large the feedback on Animal Whey flavors is excellent, Mocha Cappuccino is the highest rated flavor here on bb.com. If you like chocolate flavors our Brownie Batter is amazing.
Taste is a subjective thing. I'd be happy to send you a jug of any other flavor that you would like to try on the house, please pm me your info.Free Agent

Do yourself a favor and try other flavors. You picked a very hard flavor to nail for your first experience with them. Salted Caramel tastes more like the caramel syrup you'd put on ice cream. That syrup in general has a funky taste. But Chocolate Brownie Batter, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Mint, Banana are all fantastic flavors.
Progressive overload + progressive eating = gains. Simple as that!

Have had most of them myself and will agree with you on the Salted Caramel being a different flavor.. Its the only one from the line i didnt care for; the rest are excellent IMO.. The Strawberry is probably my favorite version i have ever tried
