    Benched 220lbs 18 reps. Failed a 330lbs bench today.

Hey everybody, Last Monday i was doing bench in my gym and decided to see how many times i could rep 220lbs/100kg. I managed 18 reps with full lock out, Last was i actually lifted my butt off, then i did 286lbs/130kg for 2 reps the same day after 18 reps of 220lbs, But Today i went with my friends and was gonna try max the bench. Since in my gym i work out alone. We went to his gym the bench is a lot different, lower, the way you unrack the bar is different too. Cushion is softer. But anyway we warmed up. I pressed 297lbs/135kg with ease. Then i tried 330lbs and i got it off the rack easily but once on my chest i went up maybe 2 cm then down again. I would have tought that i should be able to bench 330lbs/150kg at least once since i could do 220lbs/100kg 18 reps.

could the bench and the bar affect the strenght so much?

My best is 330lbs 3reps at 252lbs/114kg weight. That was in Oct/November. Right now i’m at 222lbs/101kg weight. At 252lbs/114kg my best was 220lbs for 14 reps.

    - getting better at repping it out especially at such high reps is not a good indication of your 1rm.

Best way to find out if it was equipment that affected you would be to simply try it out at your own gym. Also start with conservative numbers, no point going all out right of the bat.

This is true^^^ especially the stronger you get.
Also some people are better at reps than max weight and vise versa.
Many factors including the amount of different types of muscle fiber(slow twitch vs fast twitch),arm length, rib cage size and other factors.

Yeah, Gonna try again after 1 week in my gym. I’ve not always used reps to calculate my 1rm max, but it has always been close. But just for fun the internet says i should be able to bench way more 1rm max than 330lbs. But Thats the internet and some bs study. My max is not close to what the 1rm max calculator says.

Makes sense. I’ve always done high reps and low reps to keep the strength. I used to suck at reps my best was 14 reps with 220lbs when i did 330 for 3.

Also since the weight has gone down too plays a factor i guess.

I did 286lbs for 2 reps after doing 220lbs for 18 reps. Not much energy left after doing the 286.
