That comment wasn't where it stopped, Trump has already (allegedly) used disparaging comments towards countries which happen to have black populations, in addition to him praising countries with white populations. The reason why Trump's comment is particularly damaging to the reputation of the U.S. and particularly insulting to people from those countries is the context in which he made the remark.

Graham supports a legislative version of DACA, and is not an immigration hard-liner, and wants orderly and controlled immigration even from the places he calls hellholes.

Trump, on the other hand, made the comment in specific reference as to who should be allowed into our country, and immediately contrasted those countries he wants to forbid immigration from, with a 1st world white-majority country like Norway.

Trump's comment wasn't about those places being ****holes. It was about people from those places not being worthy of coming here.

With controlled quotas on amounts per year per country, and more stringency in applying and enforcing the laws dealing with people who bypass it illegally, as well as more money and personal spent on securing weak points of possible illegal entry.

The democrats policy is a vetting and identification processes, however allowing loser requirements in vetting and higher quotas from certain war torn or poverty sticken areas as an extension of compassion.

They also want weaker, in some cases even no enforcement of laws for people who bypass the system illegally, and even further they want a path to citizenship for those as well as government assistance for basic needs.

Some say that is also based on compassion while others allege it’s based on future votes for power.

They want to virtually stop any imigration from these certain areas.

One wants to stop it because they are skeptical of the reality of any vetting process, they don’t believe the immigrants from these nations will add value to our nation(skills, productivity, etc(, they believe immigrants from these nations will likely cause a burden of cost to this nation from government assistance, They believe there will be possible disruptive hostility due to cultural integration issues as well as danger from possible Islamic extremist terrorist entry.

There is another sect(much smaller but highlighted by the media)that simply doesn’t want to allow entry in hope for a homogenous white European dissent culturally Christian based society.

They want max security at all entries and less or virtually none in terms of quota from certain areas.

As you mentioned, Democrats and Republicans aren't that far off from.one another as far as immigration policies go. Perhaps if they work together they can marry merit with compassion and vetting.

I would argue that most Trump voters are not skeptical of the vetting process itself. It's dog whistle, and you can effectively loop them in with the bottom guys. Maybe that group really does exist, but from what I've seen on this forum, their size is infinitesimal. Just ask those who claim that what the vetting process is to begin with and watch them stumble. It was a statement about the individual people from those countries not having the same intrinsic worth as people from other countries. He made a specific reference to Norway.

It was a racist and bigoted thing to say.
