Walmart giving $1,000 bonus payments, raises pay in wake of tax reform

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Walmart Stores Inc said on Thursday it would raise entry-level wages for hourly employees to $11 an hour as it benefits from the biggest overhaul of the U.S. tax code in 30 years.

The world's largest retailer said the increase would take effect in February and that it would also expand maternity and parental leave benefits and offer a one-time cash bonus, based on length of service, of up to $1,000.

I simply cannot understand why Sams Club even exists. Due to sharing among family members we had both a Costco and Sams membership for almost 10 years. Both stores have comparable prices but Costco carries a lot more organic and/or natural food plus the meat and produce are a lot better. And there is just no comparison between how fast and friendly the Costco employees are compared to Sams.

It's hard to fathom any kind of good news for anyone making less than $25,000/year. I've been there.

Anything that puts a couple of bucks in the pockets of lower income wage earners gets a nod from me. Some of these folks really bust ass and have to put up with a lot of bull$hit just to make ends meet.

That is true and in small towns, Walmart is the largest employer, by far. So, getting a higher paying job is not easy, if not impossible unless they relocate.

Our Sams club is closing, and becoming a fulfillment center. Been here less than 2 years.

Yes, agreed, that notion is not lost on me. I didn't break out of the blue collar world until my mid 30's after graduation from college in 2005. But, even when I had a job making less than $25,000, I always kept a second job so that I could keep up with the Jones'......and pay child support. LOL

People were lined up for 100 Yards deep today, outside the store, in 9 degree weather, to pick the bones of the dead Sams Club store. 25% off everything. Too bad they didn’t do this level of business when they were open.

I was in my mid 20s around the same time. In the mid 2000s I had a job making around $25k. I will never forget the feeling when my boss slid over an envelope during my review, and said “this is for you.” It was a check for $1,000. #winning!

Of course, he also raised my pay to $40k, so that was cool too.
