    Worse than leg day

... doing cardio after leg day...

When I do my leg day I invariably get some tightness in my hamstrings, which is a good excuse for me to give up leg days and any semblance of cardio. It's liberating!

Easy.. my advice is to give up on leg day, just don't have any special leg days.
Start every session with some squats (obviously more on some days with other exercises too, and recovery sets on other days), that way there is no particular "leg day", just more legs and less legs days.
After a while you'll consider it perfectly normal to make an audible urghhhumph noise whilst clenching your teeth every time you sit down.
Faith in Jesus first and faith in squats second.
Then other details will start to slot themselves into place.

do a completely draining arm and shoulder day, then you wont be able to lift a fork.

    VOILA! Less need for cardio.

    You're Welcome.

I never do a leg dominate cardio after a squat/quad session.
Some times i don't do anything if they are trashed.
A low level intensity like walking at a study easy pace comes in nice here.
You could also use a airdyne/air assault type bike that has handle that move back and forth and just use those or at both pedals and handles an easy moderate pace.

Haha, good stuff, not to derail this, but does anyone else run into excessive soreness, or more so tightness in the hamstrings when working out the legs? I can work out the upper body with nary a negative effect, but the legs seem to be a tight spot for me and stretching, if anything, seems to make me feel worse. I can imagine further pushing the muscle, even through stretching, may not be doing me any favors.

But yes, to the original poster's point, cardio after leg day can be tough. That said, elliptical is comically easy.

Yes! Even if I do something extreme like 6 sets 10 high bar, which should ruin my quads, the worst of the DOMS (and ***** will I be sore the day after that!) is in my inner thigh and a bit on the hams, but never a big problem on the quads.

20 mins of moderate cross trainer at end of a heavy leg workout actually seems to help me stay loose.

Same here. Hams and glutes, but mostly Hams. I dont get it anywhere else quite like the hamstrings. 3-4 sometimes 5 days to recovered.
Have tried lots of things to speed recovery. Have not really come up with a solution for it yet.
Have been reading a fair bit about DOMS though lately and trying to find something that works to help reduce it.

To add to this it seems it is the eccentric vs the concentric part of the lifts that causes the soreness, and since I know I have pretty poor flexibility in my Hamstrings it does kind of make sense as a Squat causes way more eccentric work to the hamstrings than any other lift I do does to its related muscles.
Even trying to focus on Quads, causes that stretching of the hams so you can lift with the quads.

Many people have very tight hamstrings because we have jobs or lifestyles that allows/requires us to sit on our A$$es most of the time.

Obviously the answer to DOMS is to quit my job!

Last week I was observing a teacher. After the observation the teacher asked if she bombed the lesson. The lesson was fantastic and I wasn't sure why she was concerned. An hour later I figured it out. I was out of the gym for a couple weeks (bronchitis). I trained legs the day before observing this poor teacher. The DOMS was horrible! I was grimacing in pain during the observation. She thought I was making faces at her performance! Later in the day I stopped and asked her if she was concerned due to the faces I was making. I explained the situation and we had a good laugh. Leg day... The worst after taking time off.

I am glad to see that it is common for my hamstrings to be more sore than my quads after squats.

I also get sore hamstrings. Seems to happen with all kinds of lifts and frequencies. Doesn’t happen with any other muscles. I’ve always had tight hamstrings though, so maybe that has something to do with it?
