Feel totally defeated by this year's flu strain

I took four days off to recover, went back to the gym yesterday as I felt totally fine.

I had a light workout session, a deload. Went back home and the flu came back with an absolute vengeance. This years strain in the UK is called Aussie Flu. I have never had the flu come back with such a vengeance before.

I feel totally dejected by the loss of gains as I don't know how long I will be out for now. Spent hours and hours in pain in bed.

It probably wasn't gone, most flu's last more than 4 days and you probably got your germs all over the gym. You may catch it again, if karma is real.

This is a very rough cold and flu season. I had a cold that lasted 3 weeks. That's pretty common this year. Just give it time and you'll get better.

    Yeah I hear you!
Just recovering now from 2 or 3 weeks of very bad cold, very weak and short of breath when it was bad. Started training again now, but taking it easy (no HIIT for a while yet).

Always a good idea to carry a small bottle of germx wherever you go. Wipe down your doorknobs at home, and make sure to wash your hands frequently, Quarantine those who are already sick, etc. hope you get better Op. gains will come back.

You're not alone. I had some sort of bug for a day or so and felt like I was going to die, and shortly after I'd recovered I've been on/off with other sore throats, nasal congestion, phlegm spasms, etc. Worse is my wife who has had one bug after another since Thanksgiving. Thankfully I can still be active but she's only worked out once since Christmas (and that was yesterday). It's insane around here!

I'm getting brutalized by this year's flu as well. First time in eight years (I think) that I've been knocked down by illness.

Same sort of down/up/down progress as well.

We got hit hard this year. It's been near 3 weeks for me. I'm doing a lot better now and finally getting some workouts in but just feeling drained both mentally and physically lately. It has sucked this year. I was starting to think that I was all but done for but then my wife told me she was feeling the same for just as long. Now that I've read this thread I feel even better about my chances

Makes you wonder why there is a flu season. Does the virus know when the season starts and ends? why dont people get the flu in summer. Do people in australia get the flu in their summer when its cold?

Or is there something more to it, like someone actually is promoting the flu. think about it.

I had the flu last year, didn't get a shot. I've been sick from before Thanksgiving up until last week with allergies, pink-eye, sinus issues and a bad cold just after Xmas. I had a bad reaction from pain medication, gabapentin. Mood altering, aggressiveness and finally a boil break out. One cluster of 4 on my arm that popped up on Xmas, one on my stomach and one on my neck that was huge. Primary care doctor sent me to the ER a week ago Saturday, they didn't do squat but give me antibiotics.

I'm getting a flu shot very soon at a local pharmacy. I'm pretty far off the rails with the gym and need to start back slowly today.

Virus has longer environmental survivability in cold weather. Also oral transmissibility increases with cold, dry weather. Not to mention people stay in close proximity during cold weather

One theory is the sun and Vitamin D, not necessarily correlated to cold that most believe. During the Winter months, the sun is furthest from the Earth and thus Vitamin D can’t be generated from sun absorption making humans more vulnerable to influenza. Oral intake of Vitamin D is a poor alternative.

Most people who claim they have flu dont really have flu, if you do get real flu you cant get out of bed and you sweat and have chills in alternate bouts.
I have been in that position twice in my 52 years and I have never had a flu jab

Determination of flu or cold is dependent on the the virus. Colds are caused by rhinovirus, flu is caused by influenza virus. Usually a cold does not include a fever, whearas influenza does. Severity of the symptoms are going to depend on the virulence of the strain in either case. YW.

Got my azz kicked by a bad cold 2nd week of December. My 3 year old got the actual flu (tested) week of Xmas and had to go to the er with a fever of over 105.

That cold and the flu have been going through my workplace like wildfire too.

What really worked for my daughter was tamiflu. You have to get it within like 48 hours of the start of the flu, which she did since she went to the er. Holy chit did that stuff work. She went from not eating, not leaving my recliner for 2 days, and taking 4 naps each day those first two to running around playing the day after she took the first dose. She was still sick obviously but she easily felt 75% better than the day before. Rest of the week was a breeze.

I agree with this. I've felt like you described twice in my 44 years. The first time was when I was about 8-10 yrs old, and the second time was about 5 yrs ago when I had a fever of 102 for four days straight. I've never gotten the flu shot. When I got it 5 yrs ago, NUMEROUS people I know also got the flu even though they had gotten the shot.

It is always best to rest up until you feel your energy levels return to normal or close to normal. Gains always come back fast even though it is frustrating to go back and feel weak for the first few workouts.

That does not sound like normal flu. I would go see a doctor ASAP.

I think it's because there are more people in closed areas when it's not warm, so it's easier to transmit germs.

I started taking 1,000 mg of Vitamin C a day in August. I had a ton of colds and sinus infections last year, but nothing so far this year.
