Star Citizen Raises More Money Than All Other Kickstarter Games Combined in 2017

In-development, multi-game project Star Citizen raised $34.91 million dollars in 2017 - more than twice that of all games on Kickstarter combined, which took $17.25 million.

Per Polygon - which obtained figures from Star Citizen's developers and Kickstarter itself - Star Citizen doubled the takings of over 350 games on the crowdfunding platform.

More amazingly, this is the second year in a row that Star Citizen's managed the feat, after it earned $36.11 million in 2016.

Star Citizen currently comprises a single-player game, Squadron 42 (which stars Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman and Gillian Anderson among others) and a persistent universe multiplayer game, which has been in Alpha testing for several years. Neither game has a release date.

According to developer Roberts Space Industries' latest public stats, the project has now raised over $175 million from just under 2 million backers. It is comfortably the most successful crowdfunded video game of all time.

People who keep giving them money may as well all line up at a dumpster and toss their money in that before setting it on fire; at least they would get some warmth out of it rather than just supporting such a shady developer.

The videos they put out do look amazing. I think most are hoping it works out. If a crap movie like Last Jedi can make over a billion, then I think people will drop a few dollars here and there to encourage this project.

that counts people that have already donated, bought the game, and continue to buy in game sh*t...which shouldnt count towards its KS numbers. The initial donation to buy the first game package, is all that should go towards the KS total. After that, players are just addicted to buying in game BS to win.

Just decided to watch a few gameplay videos; looks absolutely terrible: Buggy framerate. Glitches. Idiotic looking cockpit. Bad sound effects. The CitizenCon video from 2016 looks stunning; but this can be facade. The developers could have simply thrown in numerous special effects to create a misleading illusion about the game. This could be synonymous to buying a book with a stunning cover, but as you begin reading the pages you will realize having received an inferior product. If I was ever looking to swindle investors, that would be it.

The videos have proven to be tech demos, not actual video of the game play. This is a scam: http://dereksmart.com/2017/10/star-c...ive-years-ago/

Can’t believe people are still donating to these con artists. They started in 2012.

For perspective, they’ve made 4 (I think another one comes out this year) ****ty Star Wars films in less time.

I bought the cheapo ship last year to try the persistent universe.. I mean the game will be pretty cool now that they have a working 3.0 to build on.. but i'm not holding my breath either.

the biggest hurdle they have to overcome is some sort reason to play it.. sandbox **** doesn't hold people forever IMO despite what people who back it think.

You're forgetting the money is going to pay-2-win ships and other crap such as buyable land on planets. So say the game releases and you put enough money in for 5 really good ships that are leagues ahead of the starter ships, do you have a leg up or not? And whats to say they won't carry on that P2W concept and create a pay 4 custom skins or research points?

They better hope they come out with an end product that will satisfy these idiots because otherwise I see one of the biggest class action suits coming their way regardless of them stating no such action can come to them. It could possibly put the whole crowd funding project under federal spotlight.

**** i didn't think of the possible pay to win aspect. Are the expensive ships just appearance or actual straight up upgrades?

    Feature Creep:

    It can happen to YOU!!!

Conceptually, Star Citizen sounds like it could be brilliant. Realistically? Just look at the stretch goals and development promises in progress. Take a real hard look at the "Work in Progress" section, and yeah, it's not looking good. The page might as well just say:

    > Completed: Wishlists, clothing physics, Towel
    > Work In Progress: The actual f**king game

No joke, for the $42 million stretch goal, you could buy your own bloody towel for a game that doesn't have - let's see, um, anything.

You can even buy fake land in fifty and one hundred dollar plots for a game that is still for the most part a work in progress.

For them to pull all of their promises together into a game that also doesn't happen to play like a job but in space, the final release would be far enough away that it would be a wiser investment to take any pledges you'd ever consider giving Cloud Imperium Games, putting it in a savings account, and when, hell, if Star Citizen ever actually does come out, using said money to buy the future computer necessary to run this game. After all, imaginary land stakes and space ships will somehow be worth even less if you can't even run the game in the year 2025.

I would only be interested in single player, and that is where it gets muddy between the whole split between Squadron 42, the single player campaign portion, and the rest of Star Citizen; is the single player in any way open world, well, galaxy or are we talking a highly stripped down version of everything promised for the real Star Citizen? If the latter, than sure, they could feasibly release the game sooner... but at the major cost of the open galaxy features that seem to distinguish Star Citizen in the first place. A linear set of missions with some sci-fi story slapped on doesn't sound nearly as enticing, as everything will hinge more upon the gameplay mechanics being spot on.

As an aside, it's remarkable that anyone wouldn't at least tap the pledge brakes at least while Crytek is currently suing CIG over breach of contract agreements with the game engine.

    Don't worry, a storm is a-brewing:
    Spoiler!

Besides, by the time Star Citizen theoretically could come out, I'm sure consoles would be able to play it. By then, I'm sure that the game industry will have found a way to normalize the practice of spending more on in-game items than the cost of your actual bloody console, or in the case of Star Citizen, more than the cost of a gaming computer for some items.

My dark grave awaits, my fate is revealed - But I'm not afraid to die
