    ereader Giveway

I have two nook ereaders (1st generation)..which I'm thinking of giving away to two people from the previous thread.

they are old/in used condition, and no data/power cable will come with it (your phone's microusb charger cable should work.. ) but I will charge them full so you can load up and read right away.

Let me know if you or anyone looking for ereader might be interested. Since it's for participants from last year, upon request I will search your username in the previous thread to see if you posted there before this thread was created. If more than two people are interested I'll have to choose two numbers at random. I will wait until end of January and on the last day decide the winner.

    In!

this year I am going with a total Page # goal. I have several large book sets that good reads wants to count as 1 book (ie Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire)

Not sure what my goal will be, going to compare my pages read from 2 years ago and base it off that, 2017 was good (43 books read) but I had a large lull mid year.

I read 53 books last year but only 6 books this year. I'm so disappointed in myself. It's so hard to get back on track once you've stopped reading for a while. Anyone else experienced a massive drop-off like this?

not that scale but I went about an entire month without reading anything. I know what you mean though. I think the key is to find/start with a book you find SUPER interesting something you just won't be able to put down. Once you have established the habit again you can expand into other books

    Finished:

Lovecraft Country - Matt Ruff 9/10

Easily the most surprising book I've read this year. I found it on the recommended reading list for those who wanted Lovecraftian fiction (or weird fiction namely), and while there are plenty of those elements in this book, Matt Ruff reached much deeper into the social consciousness of that time period. Set in the mid-50s, Attitus Turner, went to New English with his uncle George and friend Letitia to look for his father Montrose, who'd last visited a manor in Ardham, Massachusetts. The manor belonged to a Samuel Braithwhite, the leader of a band of "natural philosophers" called the Order of the Ancient Dawn. The surrounding woods are full of monsters, and the setting of the Braithwhite manor is something out of the Southern American nightmare.

The story only started there, as Atticus rescued his father, and the family returned home. Here, Atticus' extended family and friends are introduced, each of them with their own narrative that at first, can seem fluffy and wandering, but ultimately it leads to a fitting end. Matt Ruff straddled two subject matters. One being racism, not the sjw kind we see in the media these days, but the actual one where segregation was still alive and black people could get killed for the most minor reasons. What I like, however, is that Matt Ruff portrays it so well without it being contrived, there is no attempt to persuade the reader to feel a certain feeling, or think in a certain way. The story is just told. The other side of the coin is the Lovecraftian side, and there are a huge amount of delightfully weird shyt going on - haunted houses, ghosts, doorways to different planets, alien creatures, voodoo dolls...
These two elements are woven expertly into the story, and the fact that they make such a unique blend that Ruff's effort is even more impressive to behold.

The characters are also well done. Each are fully fleshed out, but there are so many of them that sometimes it can get annoying when the story switches to their perspective, as I had no clue what these point of views are going to ultimately lead to. But Lovecraft Country isn't just a collective of narratives, there is a central plot that lurks beneath the ever changing perspective, and everybody has a role to play. Everyone is important. My previous assumption that Atticus is the main character of the novel turned out to be false. He is a protagonist, but he's just part of the cast. None of them existed as a side thoughts, or pawns to be killed off for the sake of moving the plot along.

Ruff's prose has a good beat to it. He doesn't delve on descriptions or stray too far from the action, and once the story runs along, the author's footprint seems to disappear, which is think is the best kind of writing.

Read only 20 books this year, and 7 of them are in the last month thanks to audiobooks.

    Starting:

Rape of Nanking - Iris Chang

So far this book is fkn horrific. Easily the sickest chit I've ever read. I'll probably finished it before the year's end.
