Finished paining the gym in “krypton”. I painted the concrete columns dress blue from the flag. Major pia with all of the holes in the concrete. Now I think in need to paint under the flag, we’ll see. I also have not painted the garage door, still considering what to do with it. I got the Sorinex rack together but need to tighten the mega bolts. Heads are 1.5”. I’m going the continue cleaning up the cubbies and work bench area. I want to move the sink to the left to free up some space. I’ll add some stall mats where the sink is and in the front of the gym.

I think the guy I bought the rack from May have had a Sorinex wrench. Worked for some bolts. Went to hd and they had up to 1 3/16 socket. I checked Lowe’s online and they have 1.5. Auto parts may as well. I tightened almost half with my huge wrenches. Put up a mirror, 36 x 48. I should have bought a circus mirror that makes me look wider, not so skinny. Going to keep cleaning up the cubbies. May need to paint under the flag. I’m eyeing a Cybex incline plate load to put next to the shoulder press. Would need to move the sink. Really should add some leg equipment.

Ordered up some steel to make up some rack mounted dumbbell storage to free up more floor space. Hoping to have it done by the weekend.
Also thinking for piece of mind this weekend I may go under the house and add some additional floor reinforcement. Planning to double up on the amount of floor joist in the room and install blocking between them and next week add a support column and beam down the center of the floor joist span for the room so I won't have to worry about if I'm overloading the room.[M]===[6] Mech6 Crew #33 [M]===[6]

That sucked but it's done after spending two entire days in my crawl space while it was 90+ degrees out my gym floor is now as strong as I can possible make it. All 2x10 floor joist were sistered, blocking installed between them, and a beam installed down the center of the room. Tonight I havs to put all my plates back in the room and Tuesday the metal will be here to start building the dumbbell racks.

Good job, they say "prevention is better than cure". 90% of my gym floor is concrete, but last year I added an extra area, 6'x17' and had to build a timber sub floor, it has to support 1500lb rack and dumbbells and a Hammer Strength leg press and plates, about another 1000lb, paranoia forced me to go complete overkill, concrete support pillars every 6" and 3"x10" joists.
Oh damn, I remember reading about it at the time, I didn't envy your task, the main thing is that you put it right.

That sucks and was definetly a big fear of mine with having so much weight on a wood floor. After ordering another 350lbs worth of kettle bells for the room and plans to store all my dumbbells on my rack I had to do it just for the piece of mind. I may still add another steel post or two on the joist closest to my rack that sees the most weight.

I put our exercise room together after scouring this website for equipment advice.
I'll post pictures just to lower the curve, because you guys have some amazing home gyms!
This is mostly done. I'll get a couple more 45's, sand blast and spray them to match the others. As a scrawny 50+ yr old desk jockey who's just looking to not fall apart, I don't really need them. They'll be for my son and his friends.
Other than a couple of 45 lb bumper plates and a GHD, it's about done. Having limited space is going to save me money!
The platform is 2" of OSB under 3/4" of plywood or 3/4" stall pad rubber. The rack is through bolted to the platform using T-nuts.
Right now my daughter is the only one using it every day and that's her squat weight in the rack right now. (No laughing She's tiny, just started lifting a couple of months ago, and is doing high bar squats with good form for 10 rep sets. Also good form on her body weight deadlifts in sets of 10.)

so jealous of natural light in your gym. don't get me wrong there are perks to the basement, but very little natural light sucks (the deck covers the windows).

Thank you. You're probably looking at the space under the inverted pull up bar. But that's where the barefoot P90x happens (hence the spray mop in the corner).
Besides, I'm all set for: squats, deadlifts, bench/incline bench, military, rows, pull-ups, dumbbell curls, tricept extensions and even some landmine exercises... . What else is there an old fart like me needs to do? (That's tongue in cheek, but I think I'm set up for the basics.)
Domicron,
Sunlight is nice, but thank g-d for A/C during the NC summers. And obviously, if my kids ever want to do Olympic lifts, they can warm up by carrying the bumper plates down the stairs to the garage. When we built the house we made sure the floor was strong enough to support a gym by overspec'ing the joists a lot, but I still wouldn't want to drop anything heavy from overhead. Definitely not off the platform!
It'd make a great picture though, with the bar actually touching the rubber flooring...Last edited by JustTheDad; 08-09-2018 at 06:54 PM.

I am jealous of all your open space. My gym fits in a 10' x 12' room. My major equipment includes a rack, a stack loaded lat pulldown/seated row machine, a calf raise, a 45 degree back extension bench, two full DB racks, two weight trees, a set of KBs, and a landmine. I don't have room for P90x, though.
You can fit a whole lot more in your space. Stick around this forum and you will see how much can fit.O─O York Barbell Crew #53 O─O

Thank you guys. Between us, it's a little fru-fru feeling to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm soft and lazy these days, but that incline bench is my favorite piece because it was a true, beat up commercial bench with many layers of paint over the powder coat. I stripped it, modified it, and last weekend I blasted and painted it.
I do love seeing the beautiful gyms some guys have set up, but I think I admire the people who put together and use dungeon gyms with rusty plates, torn vinyl and chalk the most. It's what I had years ago, and somehow, it still feels right. I remember building my first dip stand from 2x4s and dowels with a hand saw, hammer, and nails. Build it far too wide, but we made it work. The pull up bar was a 1" black steel pipe we wedged between two trees, and half the plates were sand filled vinyl. We'd turn on the music, lift for an hour, go for a run, drink a can of mountain dew, and stack everything back in the corner.
Now my gym has a swifter-spray-mop.
