I do both. There's a 24 hour place down the street that cost me $15 a month and they have brand new Magnum equipment. I usually go there once or twice on weekends. just for variation and they have awesome cardio machines. During the week, I don't have time for that and just work out at home before work.

Works for me. I don't miss the $15 plus there's usually eye candy there lol

Same here pretty much, $9.95 a month, but I upgraded to $17 a month so I can use any of their gyms in any state, then added a $5 guess pass. Only go on days off from work to use equipment I don't have while being creepy gym butt watcher....bottoms up sunshine (__I__) <-----that's a booty lol

I assume it's the same in the US but in the UK now there are budget chain gyms at £10 (13ish dollars?) a month. They actually have some reasonable equipment in them. I keep one going (x4less) just on the odd occasion infancy a change of scenery and I don't want to push the prowler in the cold.
technically at that monthly price my home gym will only have paid for itself in about 60 years

Sometimes I think about it. I can rarely get in a lifting session without one of my kids coming outside and wanting to mess around with me in the garage. I love that they want to be out there with me but sometimes I just want to focus for that hour or so that im out there.

I can't stand going to commercial gyms and the list is much bigger than the disadvantages of working out at a home gym. However, my guess is that this being an equipment section that you may get less replies from those that have gone in the direction you are questioning?

I would think that the biggest considerations are space (both that there can be more and that you are giving up less of your living space), assortment of equipment, upfront costs / investment, and not having to maintain equipment.

Beyond that, there may be some eye candy but for me would quickly cancel out with many of the negatives. If I were like 2 decades younger, their might be social aspect too?

Hit the gym before they wake up or after they go to bed.
You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

A few years ago i was thinking i was done with my home gym, i had spent to much money in it and i was still missing so many pieces of equipment. I was thinking of selling everything and go back to the commercial gym near from my house. I went over there a tuesday after work (approx. 3h30pm) to try it and it was full of poeple. Had to wait for every machine, could not do any supersets. There were so many jerks in tank tops yelling and lifting too heavy for them with bad form... It was the last time and i will never go back. Since then i have updated my home gym and i have bought everything i wanted in the first place. Could not be happier!

I hear ya. I can literally relate to everything you've said.

Aside from those points, here's something I'll add. Call me weird or old fashioned, but Im absolutely hooked on the sound of iron plates clanging when performing a lift. I'm not sure what it is exactly, but having iron or steel plates for me changed the game entirely.

In the UK, most gyms have those ****ty rubber-coated ones. You could have the best gym and fill it with the most expensive machines on this planet; but will always prefer barbell/SSB work with iron plates over anything else.

Oh and not forgetting dumbbells too

I hear ya! I only own iron weights (plates, dumbbells) in my home gym. Sometimes my wife complains that she hears the plates bangging at 4h00-5h00 in the morning but that is what it is all about!

Just to give an update to this thread..

I have decided to go back to a commercial gym FOR NOW. I put a few workouts in at my local commercial and must have got lucky because *so far* the negatives have been minimal. However; the extra equipment has given me some excellent workouts and lifting whilst other people are lifting around me is one of the best motivators I've ever had. Also, the wife has an elliptical at home that she never used but she's now started coming and is using the rowing machine, cycles, treadmill and resistance machine so I doubt she will ever be happy with a cheap elliptical in a cold garage ever again because we definitely don't have space for weights AND cardio.

Long term plan is that I will be buying my first house (renting at the minute) in the next year or two so will make space for home gym one of the aspects I look for so I can do it properly in the future.

In short, when I have the space and money to do a home gym properly, I will definitely do it. Until then, commercial for me.

    Thanks for the input everyone

Good choice. That brick space was way too small.

For other storage, I'd anchor in to the bricks or put up some storage racks and hang from the walls. I think that space could work fine. You can do a lot of workouts just in the foot print of the rack.

But, there are also the many benefits of heading in to a commercial gym:

    1. Sick people using the equipment and coughing and sneezing their way through their workouts. We can always use more rest days in the winter by catching an extra cold or 2.
    2. Extra cardio by chasing down the 45's and 25's that are inevitably strewn across the gym.
    3. People talking on their cell phones while parked on or in front of the equipment you want to use.
    4. People not wiping down the equipment they use.
    5. driving 45 minutes to get to a gym that will actually let you deadlift and has a decent rack.
    6. Avoid over developed hamstrings, due to the almost complete lack of GHD's in commercial gyms.

It's really no contest in my mind.

Good choice. You will also build tremendous grip strength by using those Olympic bars that have the knurling worn away to nothing. I really miss those in my home gym.

I had to sell off my home gym today. I’m relocating for work and couldn’t feasibly bring everything with me across the country. One of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make especially after about 5 years of accumulating equipment

Seems like I’ll be getting a membership at a commercial gym for the time being.

If you weren't collecting rare and unique equipment, you can get it all back later. this time with the experience and knowledge to streamline the process and get what you want/how you want it.

if it WAS rare and unique equipment, i hope you sold it for a pretty penny

False question. My home gym is filled with commercial equipment.

    BTW, nice necropost.
You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Ha, I was just feeling depressed and remembered this thread.

I feel like I had a pretty decent gym. I started out with the typical “starter pack” and built my way up from a Weider rack to a Hammer Strength half rack (which I barely got to enjoy). Had Some vintage Ivanko, a York bar, elitefts GHR, some specialty bars as well.

All those hours of searching through Craigslist feel like a waste, but I guess you’re right. Once I’m able to find a new home, I could reinvest the money into a new gym. It’s just going to suck having to start from scratch.

I would totally bring them with me. Rent a 10x10 storage unit and setup your gym in there and train out of it. The B.B.C in Florida started out in a storage unit.

    Angry

I couldn't goto a commerical gym. It's the little things. Chances are, they're not going to have the barbells I use, a monolift to bench in, J cups with the lips too high. The drive is too long(5 minutes) from my house. The safeties might not adjust to my height the way I want.

Sure the choices in equipment are great, I'll admit it. However most of those are not needed. Efficiency is just night and day in comparison to home gym and commerical. No people. No waiting. No bull****.

How is 5 minutes drive an issue? I saw someone else post they were going to a gym with no racks or space to dl because the other gym was 3km away... wtf... millennial much...

I used to drive a couple hours to go train with a very strong crew in a guys basement. 10-20 minute drive to go to a decent gym (if you don't have one) should not be a factor or excuse.

I think his point may be that any driving is too much. My gym was also 5 minutes away. Absolutely hated getting in a cold car, 5 minute drive with the car still freezing when I arrive, walk through the air that hurts your face, put on your ice cold gym clothes that have been in the car overnight.

Absolutely love avoiding the freezing conditions outside now that I have a home gym, definitely helps my workouts.

You sound like youre on a completely different wavelength if youd drive a coupe hours to lift. Maybe were just casuals.

Or maybe he was being sarcastic, but seriously, my drive was short af and I love the fact that I dont have to do it any more.

You would have hated training in my garage gym then. Not heated and would get ice forming up the walls.
