Post Injured. Need advice, please help

I recently injured both my knees playing basketball on a hard fall. I'm pretty sure I tore some ligament in my knees. I have insurance. What is the best place I could go to get it check out and get an MRI referral?

Orthopedic Urgent Care facility. Look for a facility that has a high number of team doctors working for them. Or look at your local professional sports teams and see who their team doctors are - that's who you want to see.

Do you not have a GP that you see? Would start with them as most Insurance companies will push you that way anyhow. If you're hurt so bad that you need immediate help head to an urgent care center.

I recently got an MRI on both of my knees and it came back negative. So there was nothing wrong with them. When I was little I was diagnosed with jumpers knee(tendinitis). What would be my next step. Seeing an orthopedic or a physical therapist?

Talk with your GP and they will direct you.

Just because an MRI shows that there's nothing wrong doesn't mean that there's nothing wrong. Go see an Orthopedic Surgeon. Not all insurance plans force you to go through your GP first. Make an appointment and see if you're covered.

Does that mean I get diagnosed from them, then maybe go to physical therapy afterwards?

Yes. An Orthopedic Surgeon is a specialist in Muscular Skeletal issues and is the best person to make a diagnosis. Their diagnosis can often disagree with imagery. If you look at the head team doctor of most professional sports teams you'll find that they are either a GP or an Orthopedic Surgeon, and if a GP is listed as the team doctor that there will be an Orthopedic Surgeon listed as part of the medical care team. These guys are good and they know how to work with athletes. They will devise your treatment plan which will generally have a PT as part of the care team. Then you get to look for a very well qualified PT who works with athletes. They may be associated with an Orthopedic Care facility or possibly a training facility. You want a good one, who is qualified at the DPT level, and works with athletes. My son was under the care of a PT (DPT, high level soccer player, works with a lot of SA soccer players on rehab) for a year after his shoulder surgery (Minnesota Wild NHL team doctor - Orthopedic Surgeon). If you have the right care team you'll find that rehab is very fruitful.

I don't know if it's different in different countries. But I am from England, and when I tore my ACL in my knee, the physio in my club got in touch with the hospital to get an MRI scan. From there an orthopedic surgeon had a luck at the scans, discovered what the issue was and surgery tooks place a month later after they sorted everything out.
