Would you workout when you've had 4.5 hrs of sleep?

I was out for Halloween last night and slept around 4:30am, woke up at 9 to get ready for class. My workouts aren't that intense right now: mostly cardio and my weights aren't that heavy (definitely not one of a 'gymrat's'; I'm just starting to workout regularly).

Would you workout today? I read somewhere the extra stress on your body could raise your cortisol levels...which is harmful?? and may actually cause you to gain weight?? IDK

Would I use "I'm tired" as an excuse? Maybe, if I were tired enough, but generally one night of less sleep won't leave me that sort of "go-on-without-me" tired. I'd feel more awake afterward anyway, and that's what PWO is for.

Would I do it because I feared weight gain? No. Because losing a little sleep here, and there isn't a caloric surplus.

It depends on how I feel.. if I had a really heavy day I would see how my warm up feels and go from there. But I'm used to it with kids that don't sleep at times, I have to work around it more often than I'd like.

What can happen is if you are tired and cranky you may end up eating more, but otherwise, no, it won't make you gain out of nowhere.

I rarely get a lack of sleep but when I do and I have a workout that day I usually skip or postpone it until the next day.

Are you also hungover? Tired and dehydrated would definitely make me move it until tomorrow and take care of myself today.

Just contemplating this myself today after a couple of really poor nights of sleep.
Sometimes a nice gentle workout feels good and does wonders to perk me up.
Sometimes I'm so bone-dead tired that I'm just better off practicing good self-care that day with rest, healthy food, etc.
The cortisol thing sounds like bro-science. I would just go by how you feel.

I would be having a normal nite w only 4.5 hours lol.

However, I realize that is probably NOT your norm so I'll say it depends. If you don't work out every day, can you jist move the workout to another day of the week?

It's really about how I feel, not how much sleep I get. I probably wouldn't lift heavy if I'm feeling tired but I'd still try to get some cardio in.

As for me - if rest is inadequate, no gym time. Your body needs to repair itself and rest/sleep does that.

Yes, I have done it and did it regularly for almost 2 years. I love working out though so it was not an issue for me. I felt fine but the next person may not. I would evaluate how you feel and go from there.

Would I? No. But that's just because I'm a lazy, sleep-junkie haha. It is NOT going to stress your body to a point that your hormones go nuts and you gain weight though :-P Maybe if you did it every day, for months and years on end. But if you feel like you have the energy to go workout, then go workout! If you're like me and you'd rather stab your inner thigh with a fork, than workout while exhausted, then don't.

I've pulled an all nighter and then proceeded to hit a 365lbs squat PR the next morning.

I wouldn't do it again though, because I had the toughest time actually falling asleep, when I managed to eventually do so.

Nope. I need 7-8hrs just to function. Can't train when I am sleep deprived. I'd just call it a rest day and go the next day instead. I have injured myself twice from training when sleep deprived in the past. So no weight lifting, maybe a little cardio but most likely I would call it a rest day.
