One of the things that I wanted to add that confused me about the gameplan:
What exactly was the win condition? There were only 2 options and he went for neither.
1. Win with a power shot
2. Win with edge-lording counters and mirroring floyds style
Instead Conor did a blend of the two while wasting energy doing something that had no win condition.
What I mean is Conor knew from practice he didn't reach the gas tank he needed. (which I was quite shocked/dissapointed by, I would assume they could figure something out due to what was at stake) And yet he still didn't go for the knockout.
So to me, what was happening at first was Conor was NOT using his "power" or trying to go for a devastating blow or setup. He was instead trying to micro tech the fight with skill.
IF Conor had used true power shots he would have left himself open to counters. So the Mayweather element was keeping him from going full power instead he just kept doing pit pat stuff to just out maneuver Floyd. And it worked for awhile, he won the first few rounds like that.
The thing is he had to do that otherwise he would give Floyd a chance to counter, he didn't let him counter and stuffed the attempts when he did try. Which Floyd did try to fight back a bit but Conor countered his counters.
The problem is, he looked decent when not going full power. But that wasn't gonna win the knockout.
So that win condition is gone (I guess that is a testament to Floyd counter skills that you better play safe and not go to hard or you will pay) and that door is closed. No "punchers chance"
The other win condition is to conserve energy and mirror Floyd. Double rope a dope. Try to edge lord him at his own game. Start slow and do just enough. Conserve energy.
Nope, instead he tried to steam roll him with pit pat stuff so he was in no way trying to conserve his battery.
So where was the win condition? Either go all out true power ignoring counters or looking bad and go for a KO, OR conserve energy as much as you can to out last and counter.
Instead he did an ineffective combination of both.
Besides that he was more skilled though. Fighting back in the first rounds was not an option for Floyd, its not like he chose to wait, he was forced to.
Floyd did try to do counters and stuff when Conor was high energy and couldn't exercise his will. His only option was to wait for him to gas.
Which is kinda infuriating that Conor didn't try to use full power at the start as it was his best shot and he bypassed that win condition just to show Floyd can't counter his techniques.
Instead he wasted all his energy which means he was gonna run out of steam and he also wasn't going for a knockout.
Not sure how he was planning to win like that.
