I believe they are sand cast? If Weight is weight and you are starting out, this looks like a great deal and you need a starter set. If the quality is like the singles and sets I have purchased, I'll sum up my review and say that the quality is very harbor freight like. The fitness gear set from dicks imo might me slightly higher quality but with the cap, I see two advantages: 1, your 45 lb plates are a standard 17.7 inch size (fg are not) and 2, you can add on the 45 lb plates when on sale some times as cheap as 50 cents a lb.

At this price, if you allow $50 for the bar, the plates come out to about $.54/lb. It's actually a good option for someone who is starting a home gym.

This is the set I started out with, and it falls squarely under the "weight is weight" category. The bar is crap, but it's good enough to start out with and I used it for about 6 months until I finally bent it and the Cap OB-86B went on sale, and I bought a couple more 45s of the same type when they went on sale at Walmart. I would recommend it if you can't find the weights at a comparable price on Craigslist.

Right, but some seem to see little to no machining and look like they were just popped out of some mold in china and on to the paint rack. I got some cap weights with thick chunks of lag on them. Some where in the hole and would not slide on to a par without some love from a file.
However, after buying and selling a few used weights, cleaning and painting some, I will now support the weight is weight category and say that buying a starter set like this or the FG set from dicks may be a good way to start out. Even if you sell it later and loose up to $20-30 it may be worth that assuming you got it on sale and some use out of it. Will also teach you to appreciate the "better stuff" if you ever decide to upgrade. For me, I upgraded quickly as I'm quite picky and appreciate quality.
