Workouts, Pre-Workouts!... Twice a day? Yikes.

    Hello all,

I had some questions and concerns on my "new" schedule of working out twice a day 3-5 times a week.

I've been hitting the gym with my roommate every day during the week around 5PM for about an hour. We take a pre-workout (w/ stim) before going.. Focusing mainly on weights. I've been doing this for months....

Now recently - my brother has asked me to gym with him every morning around 9AM. He mainly wants to focus on cardio/weight loss (very little weights).. And this is only for about 45mins-1hour because it's during our work hours. I'm fairly new to working out in general (less than a year), but I'm thinking that since it's mainly a cardio/weight split every day (not working anything twice).. I think this is okay, but was looking for some affirmation. I would say it's a total of about 1.5 (2hours max) of actual workout time each day.

Next, I'm wondering about supplements. I don't think I would ever want to take two pre-workouts in one day.. But then I thought about stim-free pre-workouts. I generally don't need the "energy boost" to get me into the gym like other people have mentioned.. But I do like the extra "pump" feeling when I'm in my workout - even when running, rowing, etc.. How would this affect me - say 1 dose of stim-free pre-workout in the morning, and then my normal stim dose in the evening? I generally do not have problems going to sleep or sleeping, even when I get to bed only a few hours after finishing my stim-workout.

I did some searches before making this post.. I did find a lot of people asking about two full load weight workouts in a day (over-working), or two full servings of stim-packed pre-workouts in a single day (stimming out). I'm not interested in doing that. Currently I don't even take any pre-workout in the morning or consume a protein shake afterwards - only at the evening session. I think I am going to add a protein shake after the morning session though.

    What do you guys think?

    1. Working out twice a day - even if they are different workouts - Unhealthy?
    2. Two pre-workouts a day - even if one is stim-free - Unhealthy?
    3. Other thoughts?

nothing wrong with two a days but limit your pwo per label instructions. if you like the pump feeling more and don't need the stims, then go with a stim free pump product.

In order to be cost effective, buy caffeine pills and use them before your morning cardio training. Or black coffee prior. Then use your preworkout before lifting. No need for preworkout or much caffeine if you're just doing cardio. Weights will be more strenuous and harder comared to both, so take your preworkout prior to that session.
Progressive overload + progressive eating = gains. Simple as that!

You have limited recovery, as long as the cardio stuff isn't strenuous to the point of interfering with your resistance training, I don't see any downsides to adding a cardio type activity in the morning. Just be mindful of the effects, particularly running and leg work, rowing and upper body work, etc...you may need to coordinate what you do on the days or dial it down a notch on the weights based on the cardio. Not a big deal and some cardio is good for you.

If it were me I would try no pre at all in the morning, but then I don't really do separate cardio lol, if you wanted, a stim-free pre in the morning and regular whatever you would do pre later in the day should be fine.

I'd go no pre for cardio and use a stimmed or non stim pre for the later training session

Only after trying 2 a day workout will you know if it's something you'll enjoy or will work for you. I'm betting you'll get tired of going twice a day after a couple of weeks.

I'm not a fan of stim'd preworkouts for a cardio session.

2 a days, is rough...if anything I see more people warming up or starting their workout with a cardio session.

I'd look into stim and non-stim options and see which route you want to go. I certainly wouldn't consume more than the recommended dose of a stim preworkout from your 2 workouts combined.
