Quite the thread development. You want a sturdy rack. You want a strong rack. You want a heavy rack/bolted down rack. You want a rack that doesn't slide forward or tilt when you rack slam home the barbel after a difficult and heavy (to you) squat set or rep.
I started with one of the lightweight $320 shipped brand new NYBB power racks. It was...okay. But seeing it slide forward on the ground, and feeling the uprights bounce forward and come back, when racking a moderate squat weight, does not inspire confidence.
After upgrading the rack, it has moved forward from racking squat barbells about as much over 8 months as the NYBB rack sometimes did in one day or possibly in one set.
But a rack with no bar and plates is useless except possibly for chin-ups. I'd want the bar and plates first, then the rack, and the bench last

Wow I guess so. The TDS rack fell through and after some consideration I have deceided to save my money for a titan t3 rack. I am looking for a 300lbs weight set and a barbell. My father in law has a barbell that he is giving me but unsure how good it is and if its still in good working order. Im going to look for a used ajustable bench and some dumbells to use at home for the time being. Anyone have any names of the barbell only programs to look into?

Barbell only programs? That's the majority of programs.
Fierce 5, Starting Strength, All Pros are all solid novice routines that can (should, even) be done with 'only' a barbell

Oh, barbell but no rack. Right.
There aren't really going to be any, because all programs are going to have squats, and the short of it is there's no way to get legitimate back squat weights (best exercise there) onto your back without at least squat stands, and even then, for safety you want a power rack or squat rack preferably the power rack. You can clean the bar up and do front squats, but they aren't really a sub for back squats and you should be able to front squat more than you can clean esp when using iron plates with no real ability to miss. You would kind of have to adjust the regular programs for your equipment limitations.

Thats what I thought but people were pushing for the weights before the rack and i was like why it limits you to rows and DLs really. I think if I was to do anything it would be a bench with dumbbells. Adjustable dumbbells would be great but I hear they are expensive and the common bowflex ones are junk.

Oh no I agree a bar and plates is a good investment but I think as a way to start dumbbells and a bench for days I can't make it to the gym and even with a bar and weights not much can be done without a rack so its something worth investing in but dumbbells make the most sense especially when you can get some good deals on Craigslist and fb market place

What exercise can you do with a bench and dumbells that you can't do with a bar and weights? Bench press and...?? There is a lot of variation on options for a bar and weights as compared to a bench and dumbbells.
I think all your questions have been answered but you already know what you want. Perhaps time to let this thread roll into the graveyard{5'7" and under #1}

Dumbbells are kind of a dumb option. If you're buying olympic plates, then you need olympic handles which are kind of clumsy. Then you need at a pile of extra small plates in quantities divisible by four. That doesn't seem economical.
