Since you asked what I would do, in that situation it would depend on how well my investments had done and the upward potential of my income. What I actually did when I was 21 making $45k I drove the Saturn I bought in college. When I was 25 making 100k+ with significant savings, investments, property and loving Porsche since a child, I owned a new Porsche.
If you don't love cars don't go out and spend a lot of money on a car thinking it is going to impress people especially when you can't afford to go out because of your car payment. Noone is going to mistake you for being rich just because your car has a BMW badge on it, unless the number on the back starts with a 7.
Stay in your lane and spend your money on what is important to you.

I bought my NSX when I was making just over $70k because all of my other financial obligations said that I could and I had another paid off car to utilize as a daily driver
I'm well over that now, and ideally if you only have one car; a "middle manager" car. Take 1/3 of your income, buy a car based on that assuming that you have the financial means after all of your obligations. Used A4, Lexus IS, etc.United States Marine Corps [Sep. '01 - Mar. '13]

Your friend should get something that makes him happy and inspires him to work harder.
If I were him and I didnt have a car, I'd probably get a 2nd Hand E46 M3 or a 2nd Hand C55 AMG.
Something I would enjoy driving and at the same time remind me of whats more to come if I kept working hard.IW3725-04, Black 116520, White 26320

If you wanna ball on a budget, do what Doug Demuro did. He went to Carmax, bought a used Range Rover for like $18k, got the extended warranty, drove it for 6 years, and in those 6 years the warranty paid out $22k in repairs, more than the car was worth when he bought it.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

I'd buy a 2yo Focus ST for $18k, with extended warranty, and drive it into the ground. Fun, useful, good on gas, sleeper status, and pretty reliable. You can buy your dream car when you've actually gotten somewhere in life.

This logic is so dumb. Everything you buy is a depreciating asset. Your 60in TV, Your gaming computer, Your Iphone, your shoes, your clothes, etc. etc. Hell, just buy a bike because that Subaru is gonna depreciate too. Speaking of saving money, there's no point in eating out. Why spend $68 at a restaurant when you can make everything at home for $30?
Live within your means and you can enjoy everything. You don't have to spend $40k on a car to have fun. Plenty of cars can be had for $10k that provide tons of entertainment. And I sound like a fanboy, but some cars like the Lexus ISF last longer than your Subaru while being 10x more fun.
Truth be told some people manage to retire early + have fun in with depreciating assets

What would I buy?
Probably a new WRX. Fun, practical, and great resale value.
If you don't drive manual and want a bit more luxury than sport:
2014/2015 GS350 or Q50S
If you don't drive manual but want sport and luxury:
CPO Audi S3
If you like coupes and leave NE for FL:
Slightly used Mustang GT coupe or Scat Pack
