Biden administration moves to reverse Trump-era showerhead rule

The Department of Energy is moving to reverse a Trump-era rule that rolled back water efficiency standards for showerheads, an administration official confirmed to CNN on Friday.

The Trump-era showerhead rule took aim at the 2.5-gallon-per-minute maximum flow rate set by Congress in the 1990s. During the Obama administration, each showerhead in a fixture counted toward that limit collectively -- but the Energy Department under then-President Donald Trump moved to let each showerhead reach the 2.5-gallon-per-minute individually.
The new proposal from President Joe Biden's administration would revert to the showerhead standards set by the Obama administration. The proposed action is set to be published in the Federal Register, after which it will undergo a 60-day public comment period.

Trump often spoke publicly about how much he disliked poor water flow and lamented it interfered with his quest for "perfect" hair.
"So, showerheads -- you take a shower, the water doesn't come out. You wash your hands, the water doesn't come out. So what do you do? You just stand there longer, or you take a shower longer? Because my hair -- I don't know about you, but it has to be perfect. Perfect," Trump said last year.
Trump also claimed that Americans were flushing their toilets "10 times, 15 times, as opposed to once."

In addition to the showerhead rule, in December 2020 the DOE established separate product classes for residential washers and dryer units that have cycle times of less than 30 minutes and meet lower efficiency standards.
The moves were some of the final examples of Trump's Energy Department taking aim at standards on consumer appliances and dismantling environmental regulations.

Trump's Energy Secretary, Dan Brouillette, said in a statement when the rollbacks were finalized that the Trump administration was affirming its commitment to "reducing regulatory burdens and safeguarding consumer choice."

srs I have over the years kept an old Waterpik showerhead from the late 80's that will blast you out of the shower with painful pressure if you don't turn it way down to about a third open, but at the same time has the perfect spray pattern. Every time I get a shower I'm thankful for it. Best showerhead ever.

Should be a state issue. For desert dwellers water conservation is a real thing, not so much in the midwest where it's a struggle to keep basements dry and the grass mowed.

they are getting smarter and putting the restriction in the faucet itself and it cannot be removed, its actually one of the subject wincel knows alot about and IS correct


i hate the low flow stuff, its true I rebuilt a toilet and i now have had to flush it 2 to 3 times sometimes, when I only ever flushed it once before, as for showers, they suck too, luckily I got the GOAT shower at work with no restrictions and unlimited hot water

U can fix ur toilet to flush and fill faster, but yea the new regulations are dogshyt. I have an old american standard champion toilet and it will flush anything. It wasnt filling quickly but I hacked it to fill fast now. The whole tank fills in under 30 s. It's quite loud tho.

I have a feeling big TP has a hige influence and is behind some of these shower laws. Srs. Just my pet conspiracy. Americans should be blasting their asses with high flow hand held showers and walking out of there sparkly clean in 5 to 10 mins.

The real problem with low pressure shower heads is that the backpressure destroys the valve in the water spout and more and more water starts leaking from the spout thereby not saving any water at all.
It works fine in showers only, but not in bathtubs/shower combos. This shower head law would require beefed up bath tub spouts and to to replace all existing spouts for free with ones that have valves that can withstand the high backpressure.
