    Nutritional label doesn't make sense...

We made salmon for dinner tonight and the nutritional information on the bag doesn't make sense to me...the salmon was a big bag of frozen pieces that are individe ally wrapped. The nutrition label says that a single serving is 8oz of fish and it has 80 calories and 16 grams of protein.

All othe references that Ive found online say that a serving of salmon is on the order of 3 or 4 ounces, and they have around 20g protein and 110 or so calories. So, should I trust the label on the package of salmon, or go by more typical numbers?

That's what I was initially inclined to do too, but it is just so far off from what I expected salmon to be nutrition-wise.

It's not uncommon for serving size to vary across brands and the macros will vary accordingly.

I think the problem is that the nutrition info seems off when you adjust for portion size even.

I would use the USDA Nutrient Database info

What doesnt make sense to me is that the macros look reasonable if not a little low for a 3oz serving. But the packaging says it is for an 8oz serving. It doesnt seem to me like macros of wild caught salmon should vary that much.

Are you sure the only ingredient in there is salmon? Check to make sure there aren't any fillers or artificial ingredients.

I count salmon as 20-25g protein and 10-15 g fat per 100g cooked but idk USDA has weird nutrient values too. and I wonder if they count fiber into carbs or not cause some sources have this ****ed up. they should be in carbs although they dont provide as much calories

also which value are you going to believe? total calories or macros cause often if you count macros even with precision of 2 decimals they dont add up and theres like 10-20 % caloric difference from the same source. weird

on a related topic, is it possible for a 20 grams of food to have 250 calories? it is the nutrition label for a peanut dressing but as far as I know the maximum for 1 gram of food is 9 calories, which is if it is all fat.

I could be wrong, won't be the first time.

But - I would question any and every source of information on calorie values.

Consider the source. You think H&T actually takes 8 oz of Salmon and burns it up in a lab, measuring the heat required to cook it all away?

According to the National Data Lab (NDL), most of the calorie values in the USDA and industry food tables are based on an indirect calorie estimation made using the so-called Atwater system. So...since you've no idea how your fish was caught, where it came from, what it ate, etc - it's not going to be a precise number.

I get it - you were looking for a reasonable value. And looking at that label, I would conclude that the label is incorrect. Pink Salmon is about 90-100 calories for 3 ounces. With an 8 ounce filet, I'd you've got about 250 calories there.

Either way, it's fish. I wouldn't put too much thought into it, but I would encourage you to go Sockeye Salmon. If you must do Pink Salmon, look for Pacific and avoid Atlantic.
