Very alarming tweet from WHO on coronavirus

    https://twitter.com/DrTedros/status/...302931971?s=20

    Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
    @DrTedros

There’ve been some concerning instances of onward #2019nCoV spread from people with no travel history to China.

The detection of a small number of cases may indicate more widespread transmission in other countries; in short, we may only be seeing the tip of the iceberg.

    Such ridiculous sensationalism.

In the United States alone this season, an estimated 20,000 people have died from the flu.

I don't disagree that there are elements of this outbreak that are being sensationalised, but the flu infects a very large number of people. The mortality rate for the flu is very low, and only generally concerns the immunocompromised and extremes of age.

You can't really use flu deaths as a useful comparison here.

I have to look up the numbers, but I brought it up because of similarities to the flu. The symptoms are similar. The infection to death rate is about the same. The at-risk groups are pretty much the same (young and old).

I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

They hype up these "pandemics" every few years. They even do it regionally in the US with Triple E, West Nile Virus, etc here in the NE area.

904 deaths 2,152 recovered. That's a death rate of about 30%, and that's assuming the stories about china not recording the number of deaths accurately due to lack of testing are not true. The flu kills at a rate of approximately .2%.

Not to mention the economic impact of having everyone spend 2-3 weeks in the hospital.

The mistake the WHO made was in waiting so long to warn everyone.

Very rare instance that I agree with isingmodel. WTF?

We cannot compare the flu that has been around for ages, with the corona virus that hasn't even nearly reached peak levels. Yes, that is still speculation, but the point is that no one can really make assumptions and there are still rumors that this virus was manufactured.

I'm pretty sure all these "it's less dangerous than the flu!" posters are government paid to try and keep any panic down. I see them in multiple languages in many different countries and they all say the same dumb drivel.

No person with a working brain can look at the official numbers and information produced by China and think to themselves "Yep, this is definitely on the same level as a flu". And that is without taking into account any "CT" stuff (Although at this point it hardly is CT).

    ^^This.

Plus for some reason it seems if the flu kills even just one more person than corana, then this is fake news.

The fatality rate for CV is 2%. For the flu, it’s roughly 0.1%. It’s about 20x more deadly than the flu. 2% may sound low but it’s still a very real threat and the thing is, if it only kills 2% of its victims, the virus spreads quite effectively since 98% of its hosts will live to infect other people. Lot of BS in this thread from both sides. Yes, it is worse than the flu. No, it doesn’t have a “30% mortality rate“. Smfh.

The infection to death rate isn't even close to normal flu.... Granted China isn't a fair comparison.

Simple math: 400 million Chinese criss-cross China at any given period of time. It takes ~ three days from the time of infection for symptoms to begin and 15 percent of the infected contract severe pneumonia. Think of that risk blowing in the wind.

The current China quarantined are is the size of several US States.

The current economic supply chains are currently holding. However, if the corona virus causes another province to be quarantined, global economic uncertainty will greatly increase.

It's hard to draw any conclusions right now as China is hidden behind an information firewall and the spread has been limited outside of China. No doubt people will take advantage of the hysteria for their own gain but I wouldn't worry yet. If it's true that this has been an issue since as far back as November and the ensuing quarantine was a result of a poorly managed situation in the first place, it could explain why it got out of hand in China. I honestly have no idea how their healthcare works over there or what kind of access they have. Just going to have to wait to see how it plays over the next couple of weeks.

There's alot to suggest that the 2% mortality rate reported by China is bogus. People withing China are claiming it is far worse and the government is reporting CV deaths as severe pneumonia in order to deflate the real number. While I call BS on a 30% mortality rate I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually around 5%, even aproaching 10%.

That's the overall mortality rate, but it's been recorded at around 5% in certain places like Wuhan where it started. Places that are more crowded and have a higher number of elderly will see worse consequences obviously.

You guys are telling me that an outbreak of a virus that we weren't prepared for is killing some people? Color me shocked boys.

Comparing the death rates for this to the flu are silly since we've got a ton of information on the flu and it still kills 20,000 people per year. Give this thing a couple months so the initial infection rate goes nuts and let them nail down an antibody and you'll never hear it again. Just like swine flu.

You want it to be a high mortality rate. If it is a low mortality rate, then it will spread more easily
What does president dickweed have to do with the vaccine you moron

Mortality rate isn't the only factor that determines the rate of spreading. If the virus takes 2 weeks to show symptoms and another 2 weeks to kill you, you've already infected everyone you could have infected

Can someone explain why people keep saying there is a something like "904 deaths 2,152 recovered. That's a death rate of about 30%". What does recovered mean? Isn't the 60k people who aren't dead part of that number....? srs. no idea how stuff like this is tracked but seems a weird way of looking at it.

They are idiots, the mortality rate is calulated based on how many people died out of the total infected = 2% so far

They're just wrong, that isn't how case fatality rate (CFR) is calculated. It's number of deaths divided by number of total cases.
