Trap Shrugger, Trap Machine, Or Seated Trap Machine (Poll)

I decided to make another poll for trap pieces this time, from the Strength Equipment Inc. site.

I assume the Trap Shrugger (No. 235) has the best versatility (Farmers walks) and most core involvement (Looks like a decent piece and I read a previous review on the boards about it).

The Trap Machine (No. 221) has adjustable arms and is done standing, but can't be used for farmers walks because it's a dedicated station piece.

Seated Trap Machine (No. 233) is similar to 221, but seated (but no core involvement).

My vote would probably be the Trap Shrugger, which would you choose out of the three and why?

    No. 235? Nice, but not...wait for it...Legendary.

I'd get a Trap Shrugger too.

You need a rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Atty - what benefit does this offer over a hex bar (especially a rackable hex). Seems the only difference is not having to lift the weight off the ground which would be addressed with a rackable hex.

usually like using the old straight bar- but lately like using powertec multi-press too, allows me different grip positions. straight, side and facing forwards. trap shrugger is nice- but just can't afford the floor space.

How much space do you have? For most of us, space is relatively limited. Even with a generous amount of space for a home gym I'd skip all the above and get a hex bar, it will be a much more versatile piece... and to be completely blunt, direct trap work is not really required to have great traps. Deadlifting coupled with compound shoulder/back movements (and even some isolation movements for shoulders) will build a great set of traps.

because sir this is the equipment forum and every problem must be solved by a bulky space hogging piece of unnecessary equipment.

I'm curious about this as well.....there have been times when I've been tempted to pick up some sort of shrugger or rickshaw, but a trap bar just seems so much more versatile.

    I'd go with the 221

While you certainly can use a rickshaw (or trap bar) for farmers walks, I would want that cross piece moved further away from the handles, looks way too close.

If you're going hard on farmers walks, it usually ends with grip failure. If the cross piece is behind you, you have to keep moving to avoid it hitting you. If it is in front, you have to stop yourself before running into it. The trap bar you have to be aware from both sides - and it's even worse because it will continue rolling forward on the plates.

Also, any cross member is going to severely lower the core work involved on the farmers walks, especially if you do turns.

Purely from an equipment point of view, I'd pick the Trap Shrugger, but as with most here, floor space is at a premium and for me the Hex Bar is hard to beat for trap work and deadlift variations.

I feel like you can't use No. 235 for farmer's walks...the handles are too far forward and you'd hit your thighs into the front crossmember. Maybe I'm wrong though.

I would not buy the seated one. I've used the hammer standing/seated shrug and I think using it standing is awkward (since you are straddling the seat)...and that's how I prefer to shrug.
I just picked up the Hammer ground based squat/lunge (most similar to 221) and I really like it. The Hammer is a little more versatile because it has a rounded bar in front of the pivot to place your back foot for lunges, two sets of handles, etc.

This is a good one Deep, actually relevant for me. I have a hard time getting a good trap workout.
I do not do great with barbell shrugs. I have a hard time getting a good contraction with the bar out in front of me and straight grip position.
I bought the extra heavy duty cap hex bar, its better then an olympic bar but still not perfect. Not being rackable sucks, i hate non rackable bars! The biger issue though is the grips are to far apart for me. I get a little better feel then the olympic bar woth the nuetral grip at my sides, but the width keeps me from getting a great wirkout.
The trap shrugger looks great, i actually considering making one. I like the Legend one Atty has a luttle better because the handkes grips are replaceable, thats a great feature, looks like you could replace the grip woth thicker or thinner ones if dedired. I have also seen them with rotating grip choices. The big issue here though is fixed grips still, so if its not ideal, your stuck.
The seated dip looks interesting, but i dont think i would want to have a dedicated trap piece that was seated in a hone gym, a bit to specialty. I like that the grips width changes depending ehere you grap it, but the right width may not be in the ideal position.
That leaves the shrug machine and it looks close to ideal. I like the adjustable grip. I would request he make it a little longer then standard, ensuring that you get the ideal width. I like there adjustable 360 degree rotating handkes. I also like the set up of the machine, you could most likely rig a stool or bench and do the shrugs seated if you like. Of the three choices, i pick 221, most versatile and adjustable.
I also offer one option not on the list: 219, deadlift machine. It would allow more options fir movements. I think a few mods that he would be sble to do would maje it almost as goid for shrugs as the dedicated machines. If you request the adjustable stops go a little higher to minimize more of the deadlift before getting into position. Then if the arms are extended about 12-15" you could have him weld an additional nuetral grip for shrugs. This would be ideal because you would stand on the floor not the platform, making the bar position higher and closer to shrugs height. It wouldnt add much cist either. I would love that second handle to be his excellent adjustable one, but that probably isnt cheap.

I remember hearing that farm walks are the best exercise for trap development? Not sure if thats true.

You could also use heavy dumbbells for trap workout.

No clue. I just like throwing bombs. In all seriousness, I've been giving serious thought to a trap/hex/shrug bar. I'm torn between the original, old-school Gerard Bar that John Wood is selling and the Dead-Squat Bar by Bio-Test.
You need a rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Hayneedle has the CAP hex for $109 and free ship. There's usually 10% coupons for them too.

    Atty

I've got the Gerard Trap bar XL and have always liked it. Not sure if you would rather have the original stubby version or the XL. I don't think they advertise the XL version anymore but I bet if it was requested they would probably still make it.

FWIW, my traps are on fire after loading up my trap bar and carrying it from the garage to the end of the driveway and back x3. I often do this after doing TBDLs or RDLs, so my traps really get a lot of time under tension on those days.

Don't forget about Face Pulls, either. They're great for traps AND for undoing some of the bad posture that a lot of folks develop from hunching over a computer all day.

You need a rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Never seen the blue one until now (When I ordered mine, the blue wasn't available yet). For the people interested in getting one, I found a forum page on t-nation's site that stated that including the bar, it will hold up to 960lbs with 45s on it, if loaded with 100s it will hold 1120lbs.

I think face pulls are underrated, a real trap killer, especially if used in a super set with shrugs.
